    Job Summary/Basic Function
    About This Role:

    Lamar University’s online advising department is located within the Department of Digital Learning and reports directly to the Associate Director of Online Advising and ultimately to the Senior Director of Advising. This position is the most senior academic advising position. The Team Lead supports the online advising department with supervision and mentorship of a team of academic advisors and advisor seniors by providing comprehensive academic advising to a cohort of students.

    This position supports the Associate Director to effectively execute the components of quality academic advising including both enrollment and academic advocacy. The Team Lead collaborates with the Associate Director and Senior Director to develop plans of execution for initiatives created and supervised by the Associate Director. The Team Lead then leads the online advising team by helping accomplish the goals of the initiatives and reports progress to the Associate Director. The Team Lead also champions the initiatives to both advisors and to students. This position helps advisors to understand processes and acts as first point person for questions related to academic advising and departmental initiatives.

    The Team Lead communicates issues experienced by advisors and conveys them to the Associate Director depending on the nature and topic of the issue. The Team Lead helps implement training for new advisors and is the initial position for new advisors to shadow and will facilitate shadowing of other advisors as training proceeds. The Team Lead uses a solutions-based approach to identify, suggest, and propose options to concerns as needed. The Team Lead builds and maintains positive, productive, collaborative relationships with stakeholders across campus.

    What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities
    • Serve as supervisor to a team of advisor seniors and academic advisors.
    • Facilitate student success by developing and participating in on-going and new projects to serve students within the online advising team.
    • Advise a cohort of students regarding departmental requirements, appropriate course selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.
    • Advise students on appropriate course selection and placement.
    • Advise students regarding educational opportunities, departmental requirements, and academic policies and procedures. Ensure that university policies and state mandates are carried out in advising and enrolling students.
    • Assist students in developing an academic plan for each semester based on their exploration of various fields of study, evaluation of academic abilities and clarification of educational and career goals.
    • Utilize degree audit reports to advise students on appropriate course selections and evaluate students’ degree progress. Assist students in interpreting degree audit and requesting any exemptions or course substitutions from the academic departments that may be needed.
    • Use predictive analytic software for targeted advising and monitoring of student academic progress. Provide guidance on possible courses of action and refer students to appropriate campus resources.
    • Utilize advising systems and technologies (e.g. Banner, Navigate, DegreeWorks) to support delivery of advising services and keep accurate records of student advising contacts and progress toward degree completion. Maintain and update student files and records in accordance with federal, state and university regulations.
    • Represent the online advising team in meetings with students, faculty, other campus units, and administrators in a professional manner.
    • Engage in professional development activities, memberships in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, division and department training meetings, and information technology skills and training sessions.

    • Comprehend and maintain current knowledge of the university’s academic programs, policies, and procedures related to degree plan requirements and enrollment.
    • Familiarity with current advising technology as well as software such as Microsoft Office, Banner, and DegreeWorks. Experience with Navigate, ARGOS, Xtender and other platforms preferred.
    • Aptitude for cross training in different areas of academic advising and University practices. Demeanor to work cooperatively and harmoniously with administration, faculty, staff, and students.
    • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage time wisely.
    • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with students and university personnel.
    • Demonstrate ability to lead successfully a group to complete a task or initiative and lead multiple of them simultaneously.

    Physical Requirements:

    Able to lift 25 lbs and be able to perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing and walking between buildings.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
