Academic Advising Director directs the academic advising department, its processes, and its advisors. Works closely with academic advisors to ensure that a proactive and high-quality approach is taken with all students advising needs. Being an Academic Advising Director assists Dean or Associate Dean in the preparation and implementation of department wide goals, procedures, and controls. Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. Additionally, Academic Advising Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the associate dean. The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be an Academic Advising Director typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     SUMMARY :
    To work extensively with students to help them improve foundational academic skills; to address the specific needs of a particular child when regular classroom instruction is not sufficient; to work with the teacher to provide targeted assistance that is most appropriate for each child.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Help teachers diagnose students' academic strengths and weaknesses and match these skills with appropriate intervention strategies and materials.
    • Work with students and teachers to set goals and action steps in recurring cycles of intervention.
    • Design evidence-based interventions and write lesson plans detailing methods and materials.
    • Provide small group and/or individual instruction to students.
    • Assess and monitor student progress to determine the effectiveness of interventions and whether adjustments are necessary.
    • Contribute to team discussions regarding student progress and planning for next steps in instruction.
    • Communicate regularly with both the classroom teacher and parents/guardians regarding student progress.
    • Stay current with research and best practices in reading or math intervention.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Supervises small groups of students.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE : Bachelor of Arts degree

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
    Valid South Carolina teaching certificate

    LANGUAGE SKILLS :
    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public. Strong literacy expertise encompassing phonics, fluency, and comprehension (ELA Interventionist).


    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to work with mathematical concepts and models (Math interventionist). Ability to effectively use manipulatives to illustrate mathematical concepts (Math interventionist).

    Ability to break down complex tasks into prerequisite skills. Ability to apply concepts to practical situations. Ability to accurately graph data and interpret graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY :
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to intervention programming. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.

    Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
