Academic Advising Director directs the academic advising department, its processes, and its advisors. Works closely with academic advisors to ensure that a proactive and high-quality approach is taken with all students advising needs. Being an Academic Advising Director assists Dean or Associate Dean in the preparation and implementation of department wide goals, procedures, and controls. Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. Additionally, Academic Advising Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the associate dean. The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes. To be an Academic Advising Director typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 to 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Essential functions (job duties):
    • Reports to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Enrollment Management.
    • Train, supervise, and ensure the continuing development of the advising team.
    • Oversee the advising efforts of five graduate programs and one graduate certificate programs.
    • Develop, implement, and set advising procedures for GPO advisors.
    • Conduct yearly performance reviews/evaluation for GPO staff.
    • Serves as the backup to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Enrollment Management in their absence when necessary.
    • Establish objectives and goals for academic advising.
    • Develop retention programs to promote student success.
    • Directs advising operations, including the creation of protocols, the provision of data and reports, and the maintenance and auditing of records.
    • Partner with MISB Faculty as the School Graduate program officer for probation continuation and dismissal decisions.
    • Manage retention, counseling, orientation, special events, graduation, and program policy development.
    • Serve as a representative of the school on various committees that impact academic life at the University.
    • Participate in the establishment of academic requirements and course equivalencies and engage in curriculum review.
    • Review applications and make admissions decisions in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Enrollment Management and department chairs.
    • Review and approve AGRADE and Senior Rule Applications.
    • Review and approve change of status requests.
    • Partner with the director of Career Planning & Placement Office to increase master student participation in employer-related events and opportunities.
    • Create, review, and update graduation plans with students to promote personal growth, academic excellence, career development, and timely degree completion.
    • Work with Undergrad Advising to increase transition from undergraduate to graduate programs.
    • Facilitate and organize training for staff.
    • Foster a safe and inclusive environment to advance equity.
    • Conduct and approve graduation audits for degree certifications.
    • Review and approve time off requests and employee time sheets.
    • Maintain and review Flexible work arrangement schedule for GPO advisors.
    • Distribute upcoming events and important updates and information to Grad Business list serv.
    • Work with university units to assist and resolve student issues, including the Registrar's Office, Graduate Admissions, OISS, financial aid and department chairs within the MISB.
    • Review and process exception requests such as late registration, late graduation applications and override request.
    • Conduct academic probation reviews.
    • Work with Marketing team to implement website updates and create registration forms for upcoming events.
    • Conduct advising appointments as necessary.
    • May evaluate student-athlete and NCAA compliance issues with athletic department personnel.
    • Contributes to the school and advising unit's student success, retention, and persistence goals by utilizing best practices and current research related to student success.
    • Participate in school- and university-wide recruitment events.
    • Support in the development, implement, and assessment of recruitment strategies to attract graduate students for the on-campus and online graduate programs for the business school.
    • Assist students with the University application process, make referral to academic and student service support units, and resolve complicated issues that require confidentiality.
    • Collaborate with university departments/units to ensure a smooth application process for potential graduate students.
    • Conduct personal interviews to qualify prospective students on their educational goals and interests.
    • Act on enrollment strategies in the absence of the Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs and Enrollment Management.
    • Organize and assist with the business school events such as orientations, commencement, residencies, convocation, and other graduate program ceremonies.

    Qualifications:

    Master's degree in business administration or master's degree in education, closely related field.
    • Capable of independent decision making and judgement.
    • Possesses advanced understanding of advising, student support methods, and recruitment.
    • Possesses the ability to multitask and creatively problem solve.
    • Possess the ability to work independently and take ownership of projects until completion.
    • Capable of networking and building relationships with stakeholders.
    • Possesses the ability to manage and complete projects and other assigned duties.
    • Proficient with MS Office products and have exceptional knowledge of Word and Excel.
    • Have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
    • Able to prioritize and organize work so that goals are met in a timely manner.
    • Capable of utilizing advising and institutional systems.
    • Able to generate suggestions for improving work and meeting challenges with resourcefulness.
    • Able to follow through on commitments, follow instructions, and exhibit objectivity and openness to other's views.
    • Able to work with faculty and administrators to oversee securing, creating, and maintaining deliverables associated with advising at the Business school.
