Position Summary
SUNY Geneseo invites applications for the position of Director of Advising.
The Director of Advising leads the Advising Office and is responsible for the coordination of academic advising services that supplement faculty advising, including professional development and training for faculty advisors. By facilitating the training of advisors, the Director facilitates a consistent and equitable standard of care for all students.
The person in this role regularly meets with students and ensures that advising, mentoring, class selection, and registration are learning-centered. This leader actively collaborates with the Provost’s Office, Registrar, and other relevant departments on designing and implementing workflows for course registration each semester, policy enforcement, approval processes, and satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
A direct report to the Associate Provost for Academic Success, the Director of Advising supervises and manages all personnel within the Advising Office, including hiring staff, conducting annual evaluations, and preparing yearly performance programs. The Director serves as a key member of college-wide committees focused on advising, student well-being, interpretation of academic policy, strategic planning, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives. They follow ethical standards and principles articulated by professional organizations, such as NACADA, and uphold the mission, vision, and values of SUNY Geneseo.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in an academic discipline or field related to student development
- Minimum of three years’ progressive experience in higher education that includes classroom teaching and/or academic advising
- Demonstrated leadership in promoting student equity and belonging and with fostering growth-minded approaches to student success
- Experience with academic planning and advising tasks (e.g., using an early alert case management system, progress reports, degree audits, academic standards, etc.)
- Strong organizational abilities
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully with students, faculty, and staff across the college
- Supervisory experience of office staff as well as student workers
Preferred Qualifications
- Terminal degree in an academic discipline or field related to student development
