    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Advising Specialist in Academic Development provides developmental academic advising to ABS/GED, ESOL, SOAR, STEP and Pathway students enrolled in a federally funded Title II programs and IET or career pathway cohorts. This position is also serves as a liaison to the WorkSource Center, and responsible for conducting recruitment and selection processes for contextualized pathways, providing retention activities including the development of individual college success plans, progress monitoring, campus visitations, orientations and program events.

    DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Student Advising & Recruitment

    • Provide academic, career, transfer, financial aid and personal advising to students in Title II, SOAR, STEP or Pathways programs regarding college programs, financial aid, admissions, registration, transfer programs, college transfer requirements, student success resources, community resources and services, and strategies for success
    • Advise students from various backgrounds and language groups representative of the college’s service area
    • Conduct recruitment and assist with registration of new and continuing program participants for contextualized or specialized cohorts and Title II programs as needed
    • Conduct program orientation as part of the student onboarding process
    • Conducts outreach at local Workforce Center

    Student Academic Success

    • Develop initial Individual Success Plan with each student addressing both long-term and short-term academic, career, and transfer goals and assists students with planning to accomplish goals; modifies plan with student as needed and meets with each student on a regular basis
    • Monitor progress of each student on case load; problem-solve and make appropriate referrals
    • Advocate for students and make recommendations to dean/director about resource allocation for student support services
    • Maintain appropriate case notes and documentation of contact with each participant and gathers necessary information for federal reporting requirements
    • Arrange for campus visits and networking to programs of interest for project participants and arranges/provides for transportation if needed
    • Develop and present orientations and workshops regarding subjects pertaining to student success and retention
    • Make decisions about purchases and monitor student access including authorizing placement and removal of holds on student accounts

    Department Responsibilities

    • Coordinate training and supervision of student employees including work-study students, resource center staff and program assistants
    • Participate in annual planning process and evaluation of program services
    • Collaborate with Academic Development Programs staff, advisors and other college departments to create an atmosphere supportive of students and student transitions
    • Coordinate presentations regarding program services, qualifications, and requirements
    • Design program activities, including annual calendar and budget
    • Communication and support outreach with extension centers and campuses

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Associate's degree
    -AND-
    Two years of related experience in advising, social services, career/workforce development, and/or employment and training programs
    -OR-
    Associate degree from an accredited institution
    -AND-
    Four years of customer service experience in a higher education setting
    -OR-
    High School Diploma / GED with the ability to complete Associate Degree from an accredited institution within 1 year of hire
    -AND-
    Six years of customer service experience in a higher education setting

    Core Competencies:

    • Knowledge of at-risk students and their needs
    • Excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills
    • Demonstrated organizational skills
    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Bilingual English/Russian and/or English/Spanish
    • Course work in counseling, education, or related field
    • Experience advising low-income or first generation or second language learners at the pre-literate, literate, and/or community college level
    • Experience providing wrap-around support services at a community college

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • This is a 100%, 12-month classified assignment of the B3 band and grade
    • This is a grant-funded position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2025.
    • Please note:The college is currently undertaking a comprehensive classification and compensation study. No employee will lose base pay because of this study, however, classification titles and pay grades may change. The successful candidate will receive notice of all changes prior to implementation which is currently projected for the Summer of 2024.
    • This position has a 6-month probationary period
    • All positions at Chemeketa are required to be available for work onsite as requested by the college.
    • Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends
    • This position may require the use of your personal vehicle for transportation between campus locations
    • If requested, requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Sedentary Work:Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary requirements are met.
