    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    Co-responsible for the department's model for the advising and retention of individuals and cohorts of students within the Black community. Creates an advising model to address the academic service needs from convocation to commencement. Utilizes advanced counseling skills gained at the Master's degree level in counseling or related fields to provide counseling services for personal, social and academic issues, including but not limited to cultural identity, educational, relationship, family, sexuality and sexual identity issues. Responsible for development, planning, budgeting and administration of retention programming specifically geared towards students' academic success. Co-creates retention, mentorship and engagement models of student service delivery. Collaborates with key campus partners (colleges, academic departments, EOP, Center for Black Studies Research, Department of Black Studies, etc.)

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Education, Black Studies, Sociology or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Professional experience working in higher education.
    • Demonstrated experience working with Black students in a university setting.
    • Ability to work on complex situations with a wide range of organizations and a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
    • Ability to work independently, anticipate job requirements, prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, and political acumen skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's degree or equivalent experience/training.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

    Academic Support Services Leadership - 35%
    Co-responsible for the department's advising & retention models for cohorts and individual students within the Black community. Co-creates advising models to address the academic service needs of students from convocation to commencement. Ensures a holistic approach that:

    - Assesses all issues impacting student success and creates intervention strategies. Consider a student's personal history, past performance, campus climate experience, class level, major, career choice, skillset, identified need for graduate school preparation, time management, etc.
    - Provides academic advising based on general education, major & graduation requirements.
    - Provides a pathway for student's leadership & research building capacity. In consultation with the Director and in collaboration with co-counselor:
    - Manages the successful development, planning and administration of services geared towards the retention of Black students including at-promise, honors, and/or on academic probation. Acts as liaison to the colleges for students regarding dismissal, on contract & reinstatement actions during Academic Review.
    - Develops, proposes, coordinates, and incorporates retention programming specifically geared towards Black students.
    - Designs the department's overall academic advising administration protocol and intervention plan for assigned student caseload.
    - Assesses past variables affecting student grades, present quarter's progress and recommends actions and services to improve performance and regain regular academic status. Reviews academic trends of students. Works closely with other departments to address student needs.
    - Represents Office of Black Student Development's mission to students, faculty & staff in this process.
    - Hires, trains, and supervises student mentor ambassadors. Sets their goals, objectives, priorities & division of labor, and ensures their work aligns with immediate & ongoing department priorities.
    Holds a lead advocacy role for facilitating the needs of and services to Black students. Consults with and connects students to relevant campus resources to advance their understanding and utilization of student & academic services, college policies and procedures, residence halls, etc. Works with the department team and key stakeholders using data and a strength-based approach to identify barriers and assess motivators for Black students curricular & co-curricular success. Promotes and leads collaboration efforts with other academic service departments, Colleges and academic departments to assess viable co-sponsorship opportunities and partnerships. Promotes partnership projects between departments. Conducts research and maintains updates to provide students with essential information for assessing academic progress and developing a plan of action to fulfill major/University requirements, build research and leadership capacity, and prepare for graduate/professional programs.

    Counseling - 35%
    Utilizes advanced counseling skills gained at the Master's degree level in counseling or related fields to provide counseling services in personal, social and academic issues, including but not limited to cultural identity, educational, relationship, family, discrimination and microaggressions, gender identity, etc. Maintain adherence to confidentiality and FERPA guidelines. Identifies individual needs by attending to factual, verbal and non-verbal information in the exploration of relevant experiences, behaviors, feelings and cultural influences. Guides students in developing problem resolution skills. Facilitates, develops, adapts and applies cross- cultural and identity models to aid students in developing personal identity; transitional adjustment; peers, faculty & staff interaction, and issue resolution. Assesses distressed students, identifying risk and intervention needs. Interacts with appropriate campus or community agencies to receive and refer students. Provides support throughout the intervention process. Available for crisis response, crisis management, intervention and consultation, as needed. Makes referrals to CAPS, Student Health, Social Work, Colleges, SMHCS, AS Legal Services, etc. Develops relationships with appropriate offices to increase retention and advancement of a diverse and multicultural student population with a focus on Black student's success. Promotes the continued growth of the department's cultural programming and services in creating campus opportunities for a diverse student community. Helps address the various needs of a diverse student population, which may consist of differences in race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, disability, age, medical condition, ancestry, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation, or uniformed services. Assesses and advises high risk students: Reviews all options for students in crisis; explores continuing education or taking time out to focus on the resolution of personal, family, health or mental health issues. Discusses impacts of persisting in coursework while in distress and reviews academic procedures, such as withdrawal, incompletes, grade changes, etc. Works with the student to develop both a leave and reinstatement plan. Helps mitigate negative impacts on their course of study and future career planning. Utilizes professional competency areas for student affairs professionals as outlined by American College Personnel Association (ACPA) and Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education Association (NASPA). Maintains\ knowledge of student development theory and applicable models. Establishes relationships with campus and community agencies and professional organizations. Participates in ongoing training. Maintains knowledge of current issues, services and resources about Black and African American students to include intersection of identities, integrates knowledge and services.

    Program Coordination, Assessment, and Budget - 30%
    Helps oversee academic services for the department, with a focus on advising cohort and individual Black students. Embeds assessment into regular practice including integration in all program models. Evaluates impact of student services and shares findings with relevant parties in and out of the department. Assists with department assessment efforts and reports. Assists colleagues with the development of a Black survey instrument, analysis of data and operationalizing findings. Assists with supervision of graduate student interns assigned to assist with research and data analysis. Assists in developing and maintaining effective on-campus outreach and marketing efforts. Creates marketing plan for program area. Co-creates department mentorship program and/or supports campus mentorship programs for Black students. Develops partnerships with alumni, students, staff and faculty. Collaborates with appropriate staff on programmatic matters that might require involvement from other departmental resources (e.g. Student Affairs and academic departments, and colleges). Maintains key partnerships with EOP AdCRC, Center for Black Studies Research, and Department of Black Studies. Participates in other efforts designed to onboard or transition students, such as orientation, Promise Scholars, Guardian Scholars, EOP STEP & STTP, co leader or instructor for transition courses for Student Affairs, Academic Initiatives and EOP, etc. Innovates new programs and initiatives to advance the academic engagement of Black students and other underrepresented students. Develops programs to impact and improve student's academic engagement, leadership development, scholarship and eligibility for graduate/professional school admission. Assists Academic Initiatives' efforts to promote co-curricular learning and academic success. Participates in courses (i.e. INT 95), faculty mentorship program efforts, and internship and research efforts (i.e. Kennedy/Graves and Lucas). Oversees programming budget allocation and expenditures for areas of responsibility. May include graduate student intern budget and programming funds. Ensures compliance to campus processes and policies. Provides report data for required annual reports to funding sources. Participates on relevant campus climate, community building and outreach initiatives, as assigned. May be required to provide program and departmental support in other department program or division areas as needed.
