Academic Advising Director directs the academic advising department, its processes, and its advisors. Works closely with academic advisors to ensure that a proactive and high-quality approach is taken with all students advising needs. Being an Academic Advising Director assists Dean or Associate Dean in the preparation and implementation of department wide goals, procedures, and controls. Analyzes existing goals and programs and recommends improvements. Additionally, Academic Advising Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to the associate dean. The Academic Advising Director manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. Extensive knowledge of department processes.     Job Description
    Since its founding in 2017, the Center for Learning and Student Success (CLASS) has designed and delivered a growing set of academic support services to Syracuse University students. The Center, a unit within Academic Affairs, is located in Bird Library at the heart of campus. CLASS programming encompasses two broad areas: (1) tutoring and related academic support and (2) academic and professional standards education and academic integrity case management.

    The Assistant Director for Academic Programs will design and oversee student-facing academic support programming, including peer tutoring and coaching. Responsibilities include hiring, supervision, support and evaluation of the more than 80 student workers CLASS hires annually to provide peer-based group and one-on-one tutoring, academic coaching, mindfulness workshops, Maximize Your Learning sessions and other programming.

    The Assistant Director partners closely with the assistant director for academic expectations and the CLASS associate director to coordinate and evaluate the Center’s services and activities. The assistant director also collaborates with faculty and advisors across campus to ensure that CLASS programming aligns with course learning objectives and student learning interests and needs.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree plus at least three years’ experience in teaching and learning involving policy or program administration, preferably in a higher education setting.
    • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in higher education or a field relevant to policy and administration strongly preferred.
    • Supervisory experience and demonstrated supervisory skills are required.
    • Experience in the adoption and use of software for program administration is strongly preferred.

    Job Specific Qualifications
    • Proven ability and sensitivity in working with students from varied backgrounds and with varying perspectives.
    • Ability to work collaboratively, creatively, and diplomatically to problem solve complex matters with faculty, senior administrators, staff, and students across the University, as well as with colleagues within CLASS.
    • Excellent analytic, critical thinking, organizational & communication skills. Ability to work with sensitivity and diplomacy and without direct supervision on high stakes matters that can be emotionally charged for faculty, students and parents.
    • Experience designing and conducting training, preferably in the administration of policies or procedures.
    • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of web-based programs for the delivery and support of academic support programming.

    Responsibilities
    • Coordinate logistics related to the operation and flow of direct academic support program service delivery to students.
    • Oversight of hiring, training, supervising and evaluation of CLASS student employees, both undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Direct responsibility specific to the oversight of budgets for student employees. Assist with planning and oversight of budget for academic support programming.
    • Planning and development of new academic support programs, in collaboration with University faculty, department chairs, and administration, to include tutoring, academic coaching, workshops and clinics.
    • Responsible for maintenance of Syracuse University, one on one tutoring system. This includes campus collaboration with faculty and staff to identify tutors and issuing vouchers to SU students, communication with the Office of Student Right & Responsibilities, in the hiring process and direct work with the vendor to continue to improve services for SU students.
