    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Academic Advisor (AA) is responsible for promoting continued student engagement in the academic setting, serve as a student advocate, support student learning, and provide resources to ensure students are progressing toward graduation. The AA builds empowering relationships with each student, holding advising sessions, setting goals, and implementing strength-based strategies to facilitate ways in which students can overcome barriers and continue progress towards their diploma and career pathway. In addition, they will oversee the scheduling process, assist with building the master schedule, and serve as experts in graduation plan progression and credit attainment.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Maintain a suitable number of students per class by scheduling students appropriately.
    • Advise students regarding educational decisions and disseminate program information.
    • Provide support, work closely, and maintain open communication with staff and students to support student success.
    • Collaborate with Campus teams to ensure the successful transition of applicants to fully enrolled students and integration of students into the Excel Center environment via accurate and career-focused scheduling.
    • Guide students toward academic success through managing and monitoring student information (i.e. credits, tracking state testing, Language Credit by Exam process, etc.), developing class schedule, and assisting students in planning for graduation.
    • Document all guidance interventions and scheduling actions in an electronic database in a proactive, timely, and ethical manner that meets quality and quantity standards.
    • Facilitate students’ learning experiences through individual and/or group coaching meetings to ensure student engagement with academic progression via course sequence and accomplishment of personal, academic, and career goals.
    • Coach students from a systemic, trauma-informed model that is strength-focused, student-driven, supportive and motivating, and that focuses on setting tangible, realistic, and measurable goals.
    • Work collaboratively with students to develop detailed and regularly updated Personal Graduation and Career Plans to identify career goals and action steps.
    • Assist the Campus Director to build a Master Schedule that meets the needs of students, TEA requirements, and strategic district objectives.
    • Support attendance and retention strategies by implementing proactive advising interventions that facilitate student connection to/persistence in goals throughout the Excel Center student journey.
    • Develop and implement student incentives and creative engagement strategies that recognize key educational/career/personal milestones to increase student buy-in and academic success.
    • Collaborate with instructors to develop student individual learning plans based on intake and ongoing benchmark assessments.
    • Facilitate transitions with students by moving them efficiently and thoroughly toward graduation via their individualized pathway and coordinating with other school staff to ensure the continuum of support pre- and post-graduation.

    OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, including, but not limited to, State Board of Education and local Board policy.
    • Assist district and campus teams with outreach and engagement events throughout the school year (periodically at nights and on weekends).
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

    This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Associates’ degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Must have a framework for understanding socioemotional, behavioral, and educational trends related to providing key student support in an adult-academic setting.
    • Must have a working knowledge of computer programs and accessing internet applications such as Student Information Systems, Microsoft Office Products, Google Applications (Gmail), Excel, Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer.
    • Must possess superior verbal and written communication skills.
    • Must possess high organizational skills and be detail oriented.
    • Must be self-motivated willing to be a team player.
    • Strong socioemotional and behavioral intervention skills.
    • Ability to gather and analyze data for informed decision-making.
    • Ability to develop relationships and relate to a diverse population.
    • Experience working with high school age students in urban, non-traditional, and/or adult education setting; Possess understanding of marginalization and how it impacts those Goodwill serves and employs; Exhibit respect for diversity of thought and have experience to advance it in teams/organization.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Knowledgeable with Texas graduation planning for high school learners.
    • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

    Based on experience and qualifications.

    This is a 11.5-month position.
