Academic Advisors in the Office of Advising and Academic Support in the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State University provide a variety of services to undergraduate Health Sciences majors, and serve students in one or more of the following programs: Communication Sciences & Disorders; Exercise Science; Health Care Management; Health, Physical Education & Coaching; Health Sciences; Nursing; Nutrition & Foods; Public Health; Recreation Management; and Social Work.
Advisors collaborate with Health Sciences records staff, department chairs, program directors, faculty mentors, and others to ensure student success. In addition, advisors are familiar with and work closely with colleagues in other units on campus, including Financial Aid, Student Success, Transfer Admissions and Engagement, Registrar, etc.
This Academic Advisor is part of a team responsible for providing a variety of services to undergraduate Health Sciences students, assisting them with their academic plans, and supporting and encouraging them as they work to achieve their academic goals.
NOTE: The primary reporting location for this Academic Advisor position will be at the Hickory campus. Attendance at the Boone campus is mandatory for initial and ongoing training and certain College/University events.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as the Hickory campus point person for all BCHS students, including being the primary advisor for the BS in Health Sciences degree and other programs as needed
- Assisting students in developing appropriate and realistic academic plans via individualized graduation plans, as well as proactively monitoring academic progress
- Assisting students with course selection and obtaining or granting special permissions for course enrollment when needed
- Assisting students who are having academic difficulty by providing resources and strategies for achieving academic success
- Disseminating information about academic programs and policies to new and continuing students
- Serving as a liaison with the assigned academic program(s)
- Providing guidance to faculty and staff on student issues and academic policies
- Participating in Hickory-based Open House and other recruitment events as needed
- Attending special events and meetings in Boone as needed
- Other duties or special projects as assigned
