    Job Description

    • This position will be open until filled. For full consideration, all application related materials should be submitted by 5/10/22. Application review will begin 5/11/22.

    The role of Academic Advisor is charged with helping students: declare a major, plan their course work toward certificate or degree completion, assess their personal strengths and limitations, learn and utilize various academic success strategies, explore career opportunities, learn how to successfully navigate the educational system, benefit from campus and community resources, and connect to campus life. The Academic Advisor works with students in collaboration with varied academic units/staff to implement a personalized success plan, identify available resources and take necessary corrective actions essential for academic success.

    Additionally, the Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting students with graduation audits, residency appeals, unusual enrollment, and credit overload requests.

    The Academic Advisor position may be a general advising role across various academic units and/or assigned to work with a specific academic department/school while continually fostering a partnership with the student, faculty, and staff across campus. This post may function within a hybrid or remote model and operate from various CSN sites within the Charleston service region.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree in Education, Liberal Arts, Social Science, or related field from a regionally accredited college/university; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • 1 year in an Advising related role.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college/university.
    • NSHE experience.
    • Bilingual Spanish.
    • Direct academic advising and/or coaching experience in a community college setting.
    • Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and function of community colleges.
    • Working knowledge of PeopleSoft as it pertains to Student Services, Degree Audits, Creating WHIF reports, and related duties.

    The duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
    • Working knowledge of advising, student development/engagement, retention, and student success best practices and strategies.
    • Ability to provide effective academic, personal, financial, adjustment and career advisement to a diverse college student population.
    • Exhibit excellent critical-thinking skills through a demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate explanations of problems of sensitive and complex nature, analyzing and defining uses obtained explicitly and implicitly from students, faculty, and staff.
    • Demonstrate skill to evaluate and assess student's academic needs, strengths, and weaknesses, and with student's input develop appropriate courses of action.
    • Capacity to develop, implement and present workshops pertaining to college success and advanced learning strategies, effective graduation planning, and transfer agreements.
    • Show sensitivity toward understanding the special needs of at-risk, marginalized and/or disadvantaged students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
    • Possess strong problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, the capacity to be a self-starter.
    • Demonstrate strategic planning and capacity to develop and carry out short-term and long-term action goals/plans.
    • Must be approachable and personable and articulate with excellent writing, interpersonal and public speaking skills, and able to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of FERPA including ability to interpret and adhere to student privacy policies.
    • Be proficient in MS Office Suite and computer database management software in general.
    • Ability to demonstrate proficient caseload management skills.

    Starting Salary Range

    Administrative Faculty B

    The minimum starting salary is $45,463 The successful candidate may be placed above the minimum based on education and experience.
