Academic Advisor - Talent Search/TRIODepartment of Student Affairs
Position Summary: Under the direction and leadership of the Talent Search Program Director, the Academic Advisor will effectively recruit and retain low-income and first-generation students in the target area to affect higher rates of entry, retention, and graduation. Through outreach, counseling, mentoring, advising, and teaching, the Academic Advisor holds primary responsibility for one-on-one monitoring and evaluation of student needs, progress, and ultimate academic and personal success of programs participants.
Primary Duties:- Maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior and serves as an exemplary model of professional leadership.
- Responsible for outreach, recruiting, and retention, including program dissemination to the schools and their faculty and staff, participants, RSU departments, and community.
- Plans, develops and provides academic advisement services and maintains vigilant, on-going evaluation of student progress to include constant collaboration with the school's counselors, principals and staff, careful monitoring of GPA, attendance, program participation, mentoring needs, family dynamics, academic counseling needs, and referrals.
- Provides supervision of TS mentors and tutors.
Secondary Duties:- Assists in compilation of any data or records required for grant reports and will pursue ongoing professional development and training as requested by the Program Director.
- Serves as on-site advisor and counselor overseeing participants for all TS related activities such as cultural events, motor trips, overnight events, etc.
- Maintain a willing attitude to seek ways to serve students, staff, peers and the RSU academic community through the TS Department.
- Provides supervision of TS mentors and tutors.
Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, behavioral sciences, or related field.
- Evidence of ability to provide a model of integrity, maturity, and leadership.
- Experience with students of diverse backgrounds.
- Position requires flexible hours and variable workdays and locations.
Preferred Qualifications:- Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in education, behavioral sciences, or related field.
- At least 2 years' experience working with undergraduate and non-traditional university students in an educational environment.
- At least 2 years direct experience teaching and/or working with students from economically and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
- A demonstrable knowledge of computer applications and the ability to instruct students in appropriate applications.
