Accounting Director directs the operations and policies of an accounting function. Implements accounting policies and procedures that adhere to governmental, financial, and tax regulations and comply with GAAP and IFRS standards. Being an Accounting Director monitors and evaluates accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Oversees overall monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and reporting. Additionally, Accounting Director develops and directs accounting professionals and supports staff through subordinate managers. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. May require Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Typically reports to a head of accounting. The Accounting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Accounting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Job Description:

    The Director of Accounting Services is a management position within the Binghamton University Foundation providing leadership and coordination of the accounting and budgeting efforts of the Foundation and the Division of Advancement. The position also oversees all financial and reporting systems, ensures compliance along with coordinating all audit activities and monitoring the investment portfolio spending plan. This position reports to the Sr. Associate Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation, who serves as the Chief Financial Officer.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Supervision and Management

    • Manages the daily operations of the Accounting Services Office of the Binghamton University Foundation.
    • Supervises a team of three (3) regular employees consisting of an Associate Director, an Accounting Services Assistant, and an Accounting Services Associate.

    Finance and Management

    • In conjunction with the CFO and the Binghamton University Foundation Board Finance Committee, develop, prepare and monitor the annual operating budget.
    • Provide endowment management and oversight, including the annual spending plan and donor reporting. Submit annual reporting to NACUBO.
    • Provide administration support for the SUNY Match Portfolio and assist with annual reporting guidelines for performance and use of the funds.
    • Serve as the liaison to campus departments regarding the management of gift funds, including grant monitoring and reporting where applicable.
    • Review and authorize all vouchers for Foundation expenditures, staff travel reimbursements, and monitor travel policy.
    • Monitor and maximize cash management for the Binghamton University Foundation, including the banking relationship and credit card program.
    • Ensure that bank reconciliations for all Foundation and affiliates bank accounts are prepared and approved in a timely manner. Ensure that the reporting for all entities is timely and accurate.
    • Ensure proper accounting of all financial transactions and consult with the CFO, auditors, and investment advisors to ensure compliance to related FASB standards, NYPMIFA and other related regulations. Perform an annual review of the Foundation's insurance program and recommend changes as business needs dictate.
    • Serve as administrator for the gift annuity program.

    Audit

    • Oversee the annual audit of the Foundation and affiliates and other organizations where the Foundation provides bookkeeping services, as needed.
    • Responsible for the preparation and accuracy of reporting and year-end financial statements, as well as the preparation and filing of all tax forms to ensure the Binghamton University Foundation and affiliates remain in good standing.
    • Serve as staff liaison at the discretion of the Foundation CFO to the Binghamton University Foundation Board Audit Committee to ensure that its charter is fulfilled.

    Real Estate

    • Monitor the real estate investment portfolio to ensure that leases are adhered to, insurance is current, rent is collected, invoices are paid and assets are recorded accurately.
    • Ensure that new purchases are done in accordance with policy, apply for tax exemption and monitor ongoing tax considerations, if any.

    Foundation Affiliates and Campus Partners

    Provide bookkeeping services to campus partner organizations including: Alumni Association, Binghamton Auxiliary Services Corporation, BASC Mill Street LLC, BASC Vestal Road, LLC, Student Association, Inc. and Graduate Student Organization. In addition, review and authorize all expenditures for Agency accounts where the Foundation provides a bookkeeping service.

    For bookkeeping clients, provide additional support for financial accounting and reporting as needed. Provide preparation and/or review of bank reconciliations, journal entries and audit and tax preparation as applicable.

    For affiliated entities, oversee all aspects of financial accounting and reporting as required, including budget, bank reconciliations, monthly reporting, journal entries, cash management, review contracts, authorize expenditures and audit and tax preparation.

    Personnel

    • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate Accounting Services personnel.
    • Prepare and/or review annual performance programs and evaluations.
    • Encourage staff development through training programs, enhancement of current duties, and recognition of outstanding service.
    • Serve as liaison to the research Foundation for payroll functions.

    Reporting, Systems, Policies and Procedures

    • Review and update accounting policies and procedures as needed, with a focus on cross training.
    • Communicate policy changes to the campus community and update forms as required.
    • Work with the Accounting staff to ensure that the accounting software is being utilized to its full potential both internally and for our external constituents. Implement changes as a result of the review.
    • Review the reporting needs of the Foundation and the campus and update reports to maximize use of the system.
    • Provide reports to the campus, SUNY and various states as needed or required.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
    • Five (5) or more years of increasingly responsible financial management and accounting experience.
    • Five (5) years of extensive supervisory responsibilities, including effective and professional communication, assessment, performance management, and training
    • Ability to understand and follow the accounting standards and regulations specific to the not-for-profit sector.
    • Ability to facilitate a culture of collaboration and teamwork and be open to diverse perspectives and innovative solutions to challenges.
    • Personal value system that encompasses a solid work ethic, conscientiousness and ability to forge productive relationships.
    • Self-motivated, results oriented, and able to set priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a complex organization.
    • Outstanding attention to detail with exceptional written and oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)

    Preferred:

    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
    • Experience in non-profit fundraising organizations and with endowments.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in Blackbaud's Financial Edge and/or NXT.

    Additional Information:

    Salary: $100,000 - $115,000 Annually (commensurate with experience). Note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
