Accounting Director directs the operations and policies of an accounting function. Implements accounting policies and procedures that adhere to governmental, financial, and tax regulations and comply with GAAP and IFRS standards. Being an Accounting Director monitors and evaluates accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Oversees overall monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and reporting. Additionally, Accounting Director develops and directs accounting professionals and supports staff through subordinate managers. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. May require Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Typically reports to a head of accounting. The Accounting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department
- Participate in leadership meetings and relay cascading messages to the accounting team
- Manage a team of accounting professionals at different skill levels
- Lead team meetings on weekly basis
- Perform quarterly reviews to assess workload per accountant and calculate bonuses
- Meet with new and prospective clients to determine accounting needs
- Help set up successful accounting structures for new clients; including bill pay & job costing
- Stay on top of new technologies and updates to current software; provide relevant trainings to team
- Prepare and review journal entries, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards
- Coordinate and oversee the preparation of financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual statements
- Conduct internal audits to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
- Answer client questions and concerns
- Coordinate with Tax Team to unsure accurate and timely filings of business returns for accounting clients
Skills:
- Minimum 5 years in Public accounting with management experience
- Construction accounting background preferred
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Proficient in financial report writing and analysis
- Experience with auditing processes and procedures
- Familiarity with regulatory reporting requirements
- Solid understanding of corporate finance principles
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in financial data analysis
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Strong people skills
- Ability to work well under deadlines
- Ability to effectively communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders
- Proficient in QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop and Microsoft Office Suite
- Prefer some experience with ADP Payroll, Xero and Thompson Reuters Products
