Accounting Director directs the operations and policies of an accounting function. Implements accounting policies and procedures that adhere to governmental, financial, and tax regulations and comply with GAAP and IFRS standards. Being an Accounting Director monitors and evaluates accounting systems and processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization. Oversees overall monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes and reporting. Additionally, Accounting Director develops and directs accounting professionals and supports staff through subordinate managers. Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. May require Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Typically reports to a head of accounting. The Accounting Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Accounting Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     The actual compensation for this position will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.

    Overview: The Director of Patient Accounting oversees all functions of the inpatient and outpatient healthcare billing functions. Directs a staff of credit, collection, insurance, and billing personnel to insurance compliance with State, Federal and payor specific billing requirements.

    Responsibilities:

    • Directs and controls the workflow of the staff; ensures proper management of the hospitals accounts receivable.
    • Identifies denial patterns and escalates with third party representatives or network contracting administrators; contributes to the reduction of denials and lost revenues.
    • Maintains appropriate internal control safeguards over allowances and write-offs; ensures compliancewith department policies to guarantee proper review and approval of adjustments.
    • Reviews individual and department performance with staff to maximize cash collections, and address performance concerns.
    • Ensures high balance reports, credit balance reports, and agency reports are assigned and addressed by staff; is responsible for the overall success of the unit to ensure patient and family needs are met.
    • Oversees the preparation and submission of monthly bad debt write-off; ensures all hospital and regulatory guidelines are met.
    • Monitors and evaluates collection agency performance to maximize bad debt recoveries; makes recommendations for changes when needed to improve cash flow.
    • Selects, develops, manages, and evaluates direct reports; provides counseling and discipline, when required.
    • Develops and articulates a short-term strategic vision for areas of responsibility.
    • Ensures compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and directives from regulatory agencies and third-party payers; assists with coordinating response to audits.
    • Key member of internal revenue cycle steering committee, responsible for reporting monthly revenue cycle metrics to organization leadership and developing and implementing action plans for KPIs that are unfavorable to target.
    • Develops departmental policies and procedures, in collaboration with other colleagues. Identifiesareas for improvement, and implements changes as needed. Collaborates with other department leaders to ensure efficient and effective operations.
    • Prepares and monitors a comprehensive financial plan, annual operating budget and capital budgets within areas of responsibility. Proactively identifies and develops a plan to correct budget variances.

    Reviews patient charges for accuracy. Evaluates business performance against established standards where available.

    Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a business, healthcare administration of related major preferred.

    Experience: · Seven plus years of healthcare billing experience required.

    • Three - Five years of managerial experience in a healthcare setting required.
    • Knowledge and understanding of enterprise operations and functions (hospital and physician office) required.
    • Must be proficient with system and data integration, database management, spreadsheet, computer graphics, and generating standard reports

    Certifications / Licensure: HFMA or other healthcare related certification preferred.
