Accounting Supervisor supervises accounting staff in daily operations of one or more accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, ledger maintenance, revenue, and asset accounting. Oversees calculating, posting, and verification of financial data for use in maintaining accounting and statistical records. Being an Accounting Supervisor ensures all analysis and reporting are accurate and prepared in compliance with accounting policies and procedures. Establishes and implements productivity and quality standards. Additionally, Accounting Supervisor typically requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent. Typically reports to a manager. The Accounting Supervisor supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/ production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be an Accounting Supervisor typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Thorough knowledge of functional area and department processes. EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Accounting Clerk:
Depending on area of assignment, positions in this class perform basic accounts receivable, payable, payroll, routine reporting and audit support work for the municipality, and may include trainees. Depending on area of assignment, assists in processing direct pay requisitions, checking against approved purchase orders, verifying budgetary authorizations, identifying discrepancies, and initiating payment. Assists in administering health insurance payroll deductions, collecting payments from retirees, disseminating health insurance claim information to health plan participants. May assist in administration of payroll deductions, withholdings, defined benefit retirement contributions, and State Supplement Pay and work cycle overtime matters for public safety employees. Keeps careful, error free records, runs monthly reports, discusses with supervisor, makes corrections and adjustments under close supervision. Provides support to employees performing receivable, payable, payroll and purchasing functions. Performs related work as required.
Essential Functions: Speech, hearing, vision, keyboarding ability within normal limits are required for administrative, analytical and reporting work of this position. Mobility or agility impairments can be accommodated.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completed high school required /copy of high school verification must accompany the application. Supplemental training in book keeping with adequate experience to obtain a working knowledge, depending on area of assignment, of the city’s accounting systems are desired. Must be a qualified registered voter / copy of the voter of registration card must accompany the application. Must pass the civil service exam, the post-offer drug screen, physical, and work performance testing.
