Actuary utilizes statistical analysis and modeling to assess and manage risk and estimate financial outcomes. Compiles, prepares, and analyzes data to develop statistical models, probability tables, and actuarial studies and evaluate the likelihood and financial impact of various risks. Being an Actuary assists with product design and development by analyzing risk groups and calculating appropriate insurance rates, premium levels, and rating systems and structures. Records and tracks accruals, claims, and settlements and prepares documents for input into regulatory filings, financial budgets, forecasts, and other financial projections. Additionally, Actuary applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business to calculations in life, health, social, and casualty insurance, annuities, and pensions. Requires a bachelor's degree. Must be currently pursuing the designation of ASA (Associate) in the Society of Actuaries. Typically reports to a manager. The Actuary work is closely managed.     Job Summary

    Associate Actuary is a new role reporting to the Senior Actuary. The role is accountable for collaborating cross-functionally to support the development and monitoring of our products nationwide. The role will be at the forefront of pricing development as Orion180 expands into new markets and increases its product offerings.

    Role and Responsibilities

    To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and should demonstrate the following competencies to consistently perform the essential functions of this position. All employees are expected to adhere to and be knowledgeable of Orion180 operations standards, established security/safety rules and requirements for attendance. The requirements listed below are representative of the fundamental knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the job successfully:

    • Develop Rate Indications using standard and advanced models and techniques for a subset of Orion180’s products.
    • Perform competitive analyses and develop competitive raters.
    • Perform frequency and severity trend studies.
    • Communicate and present actuarial analysis to manager and other team members.
    • Collaborate cross-functionally to assist in implementation of ratemaking and pricing structures in Orion180’s platform.
    • Identify new opportunities for actuarial analyses and collaborate with others to develop implementation plans.
    • Prepare Department of Insurance (DOI) rate/rule filings.
    • Assist in building business analytics dashboards and tools to monitor the portfolio and ensure profitable growth.
    • Stay current on industry trends, regulatory environment, and emerging industry issues.

    Qualifications and Education Requirements

    • 4 years of actuarial experience.
    • Pre-ACAS with exam 5 or ACAS credentials.
    • Bachelor's Degree.
    • Entrepreneurial and dynamic, looking to learn and flex both inside and outside the Actuarial function.
    • Experience in rates and rules development.
    • Experience communicating technical analysis to a non-technical audience both orally and in writing.
    • Experience effectively managing multiple projects and confronting ambiguity.
    • Ability to solve complex insurance problems with limited historical data.
    • Excellent Excel skills; proficiency with SQL; R or Python are a plus.

    Physical Demands

    While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and/or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening, and reading, being able to lift light objects (<25lbs), and using standard office equipment such as a computer, printer, and phone. In addition, there is an occasional need to bend, twist or stoop to open/close cabinets, reach for files or other standard office-type objects.

    Work Environment

    The office environment is generally quiet and, in a temperature, controlled setting with random adjustments in noise or temperature due to conversations, unscheduled maintenance repairs to the building or its interior offices or unpredictable situations due to weather or other acts beyond company control. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule for their duties and/or job responsibilities and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on the company/department needs, project requirements, or customer demands.
