Paper Machine - Machine Tender

  • SCOPE:

    Perform functions to ensure safe, efficient, and productive operation of the paper mill, monitor staff and identify and resolve operating and equipment issues guided by precedent and working within the limits of established policies. Continuously supports Sofidel’s Employee Personal Practice Policy.
     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Supports Sofidel America’s Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP to promote a safe, sanitary and hygienically sound workplace.
    2. Ensure all operations are completed in a safe manner. Ensure harmonious operating environment. Address personnel problems to maintain an effective working environment and direct crew as required.
    3. Work from written and verbal instructions as well as production schedule.
    4. Monitor the operation of the paper mill, utilize computer systems to interpret mill activity and troubleshoot accordingly.
    5. Utilize visual, auditory, and olfactory senses to examine equipment and identify potential problems. Check operation through observation of showers, tensions, chemical levels, mixtures and flow to ensure proper operation and quality of product. Collaborate with mechanics, technicians and supervision as necessary to resolve operational issues.
    6. Oversee stock preparation activities, ensuring soft and hard wood chest levels remain appropriate for designated product run.
    7. Monitor operation of all phases of mill operation and provide direction to crew as required to bring the machine online and to ensure optimal operation. Identify and report on operating anomalies and inefficiencies.
    8. Calculate process speeds and product levels, adjust as needed to maximize quality production.
    9. Clean and service machine, coordinate with the crew to perform service functions on the machine.
    10. Conduct prescribed tests to ensure the quality of products. Document test results, determine appropriate corrective action. Inform supervisor if paper quality falls outside established quality standards.
    11. May prepare rolls for removal from the mill; remove excess paper from the roll surface. Coordinate with crew to direct jumbo rolls from paper machine to rewinder or jumbo roll storage.
    12. Perform first level maintenance on machine as necessary to ensure optimal machine operation.
    13. Participate in process improvement efforts, identify inefficiencies and design flaws and recommend improvements.
    14. Work with outside contractors on special projects, machining work or repairs.
    15. Assist with housekeeping duties and maintain the organization and cleanliness of the facility.
     
     
     
     
    OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
    1. Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements. Notify supervision of unusual equipment or operating problems and the need for additional material and supplies.
    2. Maintain safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules keeping work area in a clean and orderly condition.  Support quality, housekeeping and sanitation standards as well as assuring customer satisfaction
    3. Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, policies, and regulatory guidelines.
    4. Perform other duties as assigned.

    TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

    Computerized machine controls, test equipment, clamp truck, hoist, and hand tools.
    Education/Experience:
    High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training.
    Language Ability:
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and quality and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    Math Ability:
    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when in the plant and warehouse areas. PPE will include safety shoes, eye and ear protection, reflective vests and hairnets or hats along with any other necessary protection. Temperatures in the plant/warehouse can range a great deal from season to season. The employee will be exposed to considerable paper dust and employees will also be exposed to noise levels that will require hearing protection.
