Aerospace Engineer researches and develops structural engineering specifications for aerospace products, parts, or associated operations to improve the efficiency and reliability of aerospace systems. Analyzes results of stress tests on various craft and missile parts to determine material durability and tolerances. Being an Aerospace Engineer oversees flight tests of prototypes and analyzes resulting data to validate flight characteristics and identify necessary improvements. Conducts calculations and utilizes simulations to evaluate aerodynamics, structural integrity, propulsion efficiency, and the effect on fuel consumption of new or existing materials. Additionally, Aerospace Engineer utilizes CAE, 3-D, and digital modeling to create detailed plans and specifications to support production. Assists quality assurance and purchasing teams with the evaluation of new or existing suppliers, products and materials, or technologies. Understands and complies with all federal regulatory requirements and specifications. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Aerospace Engineer work is closely managed.     Collins Aerospace Traffic Surveillance Department is responsible for all electrical engineering tasks related to the design, analysis, test and certification of aerospace Transponders and Traffic Collins Avoidance Systems commercial applications.

    This senior level position is primarily an FPGA firmware design and verification position with emphasis on Traffic Surveillance applications. This position requires a background in complex FPGA firmware development. Some experience with software defined radio FPGA firmware design is preferred. Design and verification in a process-controlled environment similar to DO-254 is a plus.

    This position requires responsibility for all aspects of the design and verification beginning with requirements definition up and through the certification of the product. Support of projects includes schedule preparation and reporting of status on assigned tasks as well as interaction with team members from other disciplines. Relocation assistance is available.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Development of complex FPGA designs.
    • Define and capture requirements for new firmware designs using enterprise tools such as Jama
    • Create conceptual designs which include block level architecture, clock and reset distribution strategies, and bandwidth/latency analyses
    • Create detailed designs of the FPGA firmware at the register-transfer level with VHDL
    • Perform RTL synthesis and implementation using FPGA tools such as Vivado
    • Support board level integration of the FPGA firmware
    • Create verification artifacts for FPGA development
    • Present FPGA firmware design to certification authority
    • Oversee efforts and train less experienced designers


    Qualifications/Experience Needed:
    • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
    • Prior experience with FPGA is required
    • Aerospace background is required


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience with Mentor Graphics Questasim
    • Proficiency in VHDL is desired.
    • Experience working in Linux/Unix.
    • Excellent hands-on laboratory skills in testing and verifying FPGA designs in hardware, and familiarity with a wide range of test equipment.
    • Experience with aerospace certification of designs including familiarity with RTCA DO-254 is highly desired.
    • Ability to perform a variety of tasks with a quick learning ability.
    • Self-motivated and self-directed individual with little supervision necessary.

    The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
