2024 Summer Intern Opportunities for Aerospace and Mechanical Engineers

This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, LLC at the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 (Tunnel 9) located at the Silver Spring, MD site of AEDC. National Aerospace Solutions (NAS) is the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). AEDC operates more than 55 aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, rocket and turbine engine test cells, space environmental chambers, arc heaters, ballistic ranges and other specialized units located in six states. Many of the complex's test units have capabilities unmatched elsewhere in the United States; some are unique in the world. AEDC is one of three installations which are part of the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), one of six subordinate commands of the Air Force Materiel Command organization and an important national resource.

An exciting career opportunity exists for Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Students to join a small team of engineers and technicians who operate and maintain the Air Force’s and Department of Defense’s primary high Mach number and high Reynolds number facility for hypersonic ground testing and the validation of computational simulations.

Tunnel 9 is a Geographically Separated Unit (GSU) of a larger organization and as a result many discrete functions are small in scale and accomplished with a smaller, more agile workforce than that of a large organization. Tunnel 9 provides aerodynamic simulation critical to hypersonic system development and hypersonic vehicle technologies at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18. Tunnel 9 is the highest Reynolds number, largest scale ground test facility in the world capable of simultaneously collecting continuous pitch polar static force and moment, pressure and heat transfer data during each run.

The NAS Internship Program offers 10-12 week full time summer internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering and computer science. As part of the internship, you are paired with experienced engineers and scientists who serve as your mentor(s) in completing assigned projects gaining valuable experience in your field of study while contributing to Air Force and NAS missions. You will be required to present a briefing to senior management on work accomplished, lessons learned, and further recommended actions.

Our internship is structured such that you are assigned multiple tasks to complete throughout the summer to provide exposure to the variety of types of work conducted at AEDC Tunnel 9. These are real engineering assignments that need to be completed, not busy work to keep you occupied.

Examples of types of tasks interns have worked include: (these are examples, not an exhaustive list):
    • Create and modify electrical schematics using AutoCAD
    • Develop graphical user interfaces for processing, analyzing, and decoding data
    • Research power load bank systems to determine feasibility of use in emergency generator systems
    • Develop and configure portable wireless capability for instrumentation network
    • Modify or develop hardware and software interfaces between data sources and computer hardware used in integrated data acquisition and processing systems
    • Assist in the field implementation, validation and verification of new or recently modified measurement, data acquisition, and/or controls systems
    • Improve/Add limit indicator to networks and facility HMI screens utilized by operators in the facilities
    • Analyze current optical measurement system and provide recommendations for upgrade of existing analog drive motors with more modern stepper motor technology
