    General Summary

    Under general supervision instructs students in agricultural theory and practices such as equipment operation and safety; natural resource conservation; landscape design, maintenance, and installation; and greenhouse technology and management.

    Essential Functions

    • Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
    • Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
    • Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning and working environment.
    • Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
    • Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications appropriate to prepare students for a 21st century global, knowledge-based economy.
    • Teaches concepts and skills in agricultural theory and practices such as equipment operation and safety; natural resource conservation (including forestry, soils, and wildlife management, etc.); landscape design, maintenance and installation; and greenhouse technology and management.
    • Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, competency forms, discipline reports, etc.
    • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
    • Organizes classroom and laboratory areas for daily instruction.
    • Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools.
    • Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; analyzes assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap; evaluates contributions in group projects.
    • Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
    • Develops students' creative and practical problem-solving skills related to relevant materials and processes of the industry.
    • Instructs and coaches students in the rudiments of obtaining and retaining a job; stays informed of current entry job requirements; completes job references for students when requested.
    • Recruits professionals in the field to serve on the annual advisory committee; meets semi-annually to solicit input from community partners regarding current issues and employment opportunities.
    • Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, activities, etc.; issues reports to inform parents of students' progress.
    • Actively serves as Future Farmers of America (FFA) Advisor and meets all requirements for extended 240 day contract which includes required FFA activities, adult education meetings, attendance at region/ state agricultural conferences and professional development.

    Minimum Education/Work Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in agricultural education with previous student teaching experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
    • Valid South Carolina teaching certification


    Knowledge/Skills

    Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school district which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of and ability to implement training methods used in teaching agriculture concepts and skills to classroom students. Ability to provide instruction to students using 21st century teaching techniques and/or supervised practice. Knowledge of and ability to implement methods for developing lesson plans, materials and classroom activities which stimulate learning and provide for personalization. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation and utilization of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of counseling methods necessary for handling student academic and adjustment problems. Knowledge of student services available and referral procedures. Ability to identify student adjustment and/or academic problems, provide counseling and/or recommend appropriate remedial action. Ability to supervise students and maintain order in various classroom and instructional activities and situations. Ability to demonstrate high level application of technology devices in the performance of daily activities. Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and all other stakeholders involved in the activities of the job.

    Working Conditions

    Classroom duties are conducted in an environment with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Laboratory and outdoor teaching is required with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, humidity, and rain. Requires constant attention working with students. Physical demands of laboratory work require frequent lifting/moving of items weighing up to fifty pounds. Occasional travel is required; possible overnight travel required. Job requires the operation of general office and agricultural/ horticultural equipment.

    Responsibility

    Supervises students in classroom and laboratory situations. Responsible for classroom materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions.

    Evaluation

    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board's policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
