    Requires 5 or more years of diversified experience in plant, equipment and machine maintenance, CMMS operations, including setting up of preventive/predictive maintenance programs, repairing and rebuilding machines, installing all types of plant and production equipment and machines, performing and/or supervising electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, sheet metal and other work, training and supervising all categories of maintenance personnel and some experience with contractors and vendors on various aspects of construction, installation and the procurement of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.

    Requires analytical effort, initiative, ingenuity and judgment in planning and directing machine and equipment repairs, installation and maintenance of plant utilities, equipment and production machines. Has latitude and responsibility to handle any emergency maintenance problems. Assistance is available from Manager and others on the more complex problems.

    Requires knowledge of all phases of plant and equipment maintenance involving production machines and equipment; electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, blower, exhaust, plumbing and power supply systems; compressors, air conditioning and heating systems. Must have knowledge of building trades including carpentry, masonry and general construction and ability in using electrical and mechanical principles, charts, tables, drawings, mathematics and various preventive maintenance techniques. Knowledge of basic principles of supervision and leadership, planning and scheduling of work assignments, handling of personnel problems, is essential. Prefer a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Minimum requirements are High school education plus two year Technical degree or military equivalent.

    ESSENTIAL PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION:

    Under the general direction of the Engineering Manager lead and manage all categories of maintenance involving machines, equipment, plant and office facilities and grounds. Improve the effectiveness of the department's Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Programs. Maximize the use and benefits from the existing CMMS. Create a learning environment that provides the opportunity for maintenance personnel to improve their skills to better maintain the plant's equipment and processes. Focus the Maintenance group on improving equipment uptime and machine reliability in order to meet the plant goals and objectives.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Supervise the activities of all Maintenance personnel, including two salaried Maintenance Supervisors. Work involves functions such as machine installations and repair, machining parts for repair of equipment, welding, brazing, soldering, sheet metal work, electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, painting, concrete work, preventative and predictive maintenance, office maintenance.
    • Train subordinates, assign and check work, maintain discipline and enforce safety and good housekeeping regulations. Recommend hiring, dismissals, transfers and upgrading. Establish good personnel relations and ensure continuous maintenance of high morale, efficiency and harmonious operations. Rate personnel performance in accordance with established procedures. Ensure strict adherence to the Company rules and regulations.
    • Receive and/or personally prepare work orders. Plan, schedule and assign work and keep close check on progress in order to have the minimum possible interruption of normal activities in the plant and offices. Work from drawings and sketches provided by Plant Engineering and/or make sketches of work to be done, estimate labor costs and calculate materials required. Coordinate the work on major projects to ensure that assigned tasks are performed according to established schedules.
    • Normally will have knowledge of wages of subordinate and may have information regarding proposed construction or installations and personnel relations problems.
    • Errors in analysis, judgment and calculations in working on job estimates and on approaches to the solution of machine/equipment installation, repair or maintenance may result in excessive costs and delays; however, work is subject to review by Manager.
    • Requires some physical effort when personally assisting subordinates with the more difficult and extensive jobs.
    • Concentration and attention are required intermittently when working out approaches to the more complex repairs and installations, planning work schedules for subordinates and devising preventive maintenance procedures.
    • Normal work loads assigned with frequent peak loads, deadlines and pressures imposed by simultaneous breakdowns of machines and equipment and other emergency situations. Diversion is provided in the form of less demanding duties such as discussions, conferences and routine checking of work.
    • Exposed to some adverse conditions such as dirt, oil, water, fumes, and heat. Must be on call on 24-hour basis for emergencies. Occasional travel for short periods may be required to various vendors or seminars.
    • Requires writing letters, memoranda, instructions, procedures, appropriation requests, and occasional reports.
    • Contacts are primarily with other departments in the plant, other supervisors, operators, manufacturing management, engineers and frequent contacts with contractors and vendors.
    • Direct supervision of two salaried Maintenance Supervisors and indirect supervision of all hourly maintenance personnel.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Supervise a variety of construction work, building of partitions, installation and repair of electrical plumbing, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and heating and ventilating equipment, fabrication of improved equipment and/or component parts and supporting structures. Ensure that all water, gas lines, sprinkler systems, valves, regulators, control instruments, electrical systems, and lighting are properly installed and maintained.
    • Supervise all activities in the boiler room, including operation of the air compressors, pumps, blowers, air conditioning equipment and various accessories and instruments. Maintain the steam tracing and steam heating systems.
    • Supervise all types of installation, repair, and maintenance work including setting up and repair of machines, equipment and accessories. Arrange for the machining and fabricating of repair parts. Direct the installation of new machines and equipment and relocation of existing machines and equipment.
    • Work closely with factory management, Engineers, Department Managers and others on maintenance problems and make recommendations for improving machines, equipment, accessories, instruments, processes, safety and housekeeping. Assist in obtaining quotations and negotiating for outside contract work, such as major wiring, rigging, concrete work and general construction. Recommend new or expanded facilities such as power supply, air conditioning, exhaust systems, plumbing and lighting.
    • Requisition materials, supplies, equipment and tools. Exercise supervision over the proper use of maintenance tools and equipment.
    • Plan, develop and implement approved programs and procedures for preventive maintenance. Set up and maintain records. Be on call on 24-hour basis for emergencies.
    • Exercise responsibility for own professional development through continuing education, attending seminars, visits to other company locations and other means.
    • Perform other related duties as directed by Supervisor.
