Aircraft Mechanic Assistant maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots aircraft components to ensure safe and reliable performance. Conducts routine servicing to optimize the lifetime of aircraft airframe and engine components according to internal procedures, guidelines, and technical handbooks. Being an Aircraft Mechanic Assistant utilizes a variety of tools and equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues and determine malfunctioning parts of aircraft engines and assemblies. Follows company protocols to maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization within the hangar or workshop. Additionally, Aircraft Mechanic Assistant recommends part changes or adjustments to ensure compliance with all federal aviation regulations, standards, and specifications. Maintains accurate records of services and procedures performed and documents and reports issues, concerns, and unusual wear or damage of parts. Requires a high school diploma. Requires FAA Airframe (A) and Powerplant (P) Mechanic License. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Aircraft Mechanic Assistant works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job.     VTG is seeking an Aircraft Mechanic Helper in Virginia Beach, VA.


    What will you do?

    The Aircraft Mechanic Helper assists Aircraft Mechanic in the removal of electrical components, hydraulic actuators, flight surfaces, struts and tires, performs any combination of the following duties on the F-18 aircraft.

    • May be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records. Prioritizes workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.
    • Comply with all current sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance and ALSS.
    • Removes parts such as control cables, fuel tanks, tires, batteries and filters, using mechanic's tools.
    • Removes inspection plates, cowling, engine covers, floor boards, and related items to provide access for inspection and removal of required items.
    • Disconnects instruments, ignition systems, and fuel and oil lines.
    • Assists in dismantling assemblies such as engines, plumbing and hydraulic systems, aircraft structural sections.
    • Performs routine duties such as furnishing materials, tools and supplies to mechanic, lifting and holding materials in place during operation; cleaning work areas and machines, tools, and equipment.
    • Cleans aircraft parts and assemblies with solvents or other cleaning solutions.
    • Perform other job related duties as may be assigned.

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Possess a valid US State driver's license.
    • Ability to read and interpret data is required.
    • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

    Experience & Education

    • High School degree or equivalent required.
    • Completion of specialized courses in F-18 aircraft structural repair or F-18 avionics repair is required.
    • Must have experience as an Aviation Structural Mechanic Safety Equipment Technician.

    Physical Requirements/Working Environment

    • May work in Aircraft maintenance hangar or outside.
    • May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
    • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft.
    • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for certain periods throughout the day.
    • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
    • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.
    • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • May be required to, read dials/gauges, identify small objects and hand tools.
    • Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales.
    • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
    • Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.
    • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.
