Follows company protocols to maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization within the hangar or workshop. Additionally, Airframe and Engine Mechanic, Sr. recommends part changes or adjustments to ensure compliance with all federal aviation regulations, standards, and specifications. Maintains accurate records of services and procedures performed and documents and reports issues, concerns, and unusual wear or damage of parts. Requires a high school diploma. Requires FAA Airframe (A) and Powerplant (P) Mechanic License. Typically reports to a supervisor.     THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
    Public Works – Morgan Shop, in partnership with Parks & Recreation, is seeking candidates with practical experience in maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and small engine equipment. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in diagnosis and repair of small engine vehicles and equipment, and experience in custom fabrication work.

    ABOUT THE POSITION
    The Parks Small Engine Mechanic performs skilled work in servicing, repairing, and maintaining equipment used in connection with the construction and maintenance of County Park and campground locations. The incumbent in this classification performs a wide range of preventative, diagnostic and repair work to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems. This will include gasoline (2- and 4-cycle) or diesel-powered commercial mowers, and Off-Road Vehicles, dump trailers, as well as small equipment such as blowers, edgers and chainsaws, some of which may be electric, and battery powered. This position is decentralized with the Parks and Recreation Department assigned to the Community Parks and County Centers division under the general supervision of a Park Supervisor and/or Park Manager. This position is expected to perform with a high degree of skill and independence.

    Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Craft/Maintenance Institutional bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.

    Individuals who are in a full-time classification position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months, for a total of eighteen months.

    Incumbents may also be subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday, and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

    Typical Tasks

    • Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical issues on County Park maintenance equipment, and a variety of other diesel and gasoline powered equipment as required;
    • Receive information from users, evaluate equipment problem, and determine action required for facilitating repair;
    • Performs general overhaul and repair work on mowers, small engines and other automotive equipment;
    • Maintains tools, tractors, vehicles and other equipment; performs oil changes, greases chassis, sharpens and changes mower blades; cleans, repairs and paints equipment and parts;
    • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for County Park Maintenance Equipment and amenities; weld, braze, cut shape and fasten metal parts;
    • Use welding and torch equipment, drill presses, grinders and a large assortment of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments required for journey level fabrication work;
    • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, valves and air and hydraulic systems;
    • Troubleshoot, repair and/or replace electrical and electronic parts related to trailer hydraulic operations, connections to tow vehicle, brake and turn signal lights;
    • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheels, tires and guide wheels, bearings, oil seals, hydraulic motors, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment;
    • Replace or repair brakes, braking systems on trailers that are electrically or hydraulically activated;
    • Provide maintenance instruction to other parks staff;
    • Make repairs in the field as required;
    • Maintain work, time, and material records;
    • Maintain an inventory and stock items (tools, supplies, and equipment) for equipment repair and maintenance;
    • Maintains equipment service records, schedules equipment servicing, monitor equipment fleet for safety issues needing repair;
    • Maintain the inventory of maintenance equipment and assists with salvaging of retired units;
    • Diagnose and repair various electronic and computer controlled devices; perform soldering;
    • May tow and/or transport equipment or vehicles for repair;
    • Test equipment to ensure problem has been resolved; and
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)

    KNOWLEDGE
    • The operating principles of automotive equipment and other equipment powered with gasoline and diesel;
    • Automotive emission control standards;
    • Automotive A/C & smog control standards;
    • Principles of preventive maintenance; and
    • Basic computer operations.
    SKILLS/ABILITIES
    • Demonstrate journeyman level competency in the adjustment and repair of equipment;
    • Diagnose malfunctions and repairs, rebuild and adjust gasoline and diesel engines;
    • Read and write English sufficient to interpret automotive manuals, parts books, and repairs orders;
    • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
    • Prepare and maintain electronic and written records of repair orders, work completed, parts and materials used;
    • Climb ladders, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl and move arms, as needed; and
    • Pull or push 75 pounds in moving engine parts and lift 50 pounds in carrying auto parts.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
    • Three (3) years of journey level experience as an automotive mechanic. Experience must include computer diagnostic and repairing of engines, transmissions, front suspension, and differentials.
    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS 
    In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening may focus on the following desirable qualifications. Please list any of these qualifications you may have within the "Duties" section of the online application.
     
    • Welding - One (1) year of experience in Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG), Metal Inert Gas Welding (MIG), or Stick/Shielded Metal Arc welding or 6 months of experience and a Welding Certification/s in TIG, MIG, or Stick/Shielded Metal Arc welding from a Technical Institute or College; OR
    • Small Engines - One (1) year of experience in the overhaul and repair of Small Engines or 6 months of experience and a Small Engines Certification/s from a Technical Institute or College; OR
    • One (1) year of experience working on commercial mower hydraulics.
