Director, Multicultural Student Affairs

  • The Director of Multicultural Student Affairs reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and is responsible for providing leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, education, training and programming for students.
     
    The Director directly supervises the Multicultural Student Affairs staff and collaborates with academic and administrative units throughout the University on diversity, equity, inclusion initiatives. The department serves as an integral part of the university and Student Affairs.
    • Provide oversight and strategic leadership to the Multicultural Student Affairs department to ensure delivery of programming, resources, and services to meet the needs of our student population.
    • Provide supervision, direction and mentorship to staff and student workers.
    • Responsible for budget management of operating expenses and grants (if applicable).
    • Provide support and advocacy services, education, training, and programming to students.
    • Collaborate with faculty, academic units and administrative offices to implement programming and initiatives to enhance the recruitment, retention, matriculation, and graduation of underserved student populations.
    • Build and foster relationships with campus colleagues. Serve as a resource to the campus community on policy development and initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, social justice, multicultural competence and related themes.
    • Develop, implement and manage assessment and documentation of programs and trainings.
    • Participate in fundraising and preparing grant proposals to support departmental programs and objectives.
     
    Student Support and Programming
    • Develop and deliver educational, support and identity-based programs to students. Provide leadership and vision in the development of new programmatic initiatives for students.
    • Develop and deliver social justice presentations and trainings to enhance campus community understanding of underrepresented and marginalized student populations.
    • Collaborate with campus departments to create and implement a calendar of programs and activities that focus on diversity and belonging within a student development framework.
    • Advise and support student organization initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
    • Design, implement, and coordinate student success and retention initiatives for underserved student populations. 
    • Coordinate social media and departmental marketing activity.
    • Provide support to students experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties by connecting to university resources and engaging in follow-up as appropriate.

     Administrative Responsibilities
    • Make daily independent decisions to ensure department objectives are met and that University policies and procedures are followed.
    • Ensure effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards for programs/events, staff, and self.
    • Contribute ideas and viewpoints on operational and strategic plans for the department and campus programs/events.
    • Maintain relationship with employee resource and alumni affinity groups.
    • Develop and provide oversight for the strategic plan, departmental reports, and accreditation reports.
    • Develop and conduct on-going assessment of programs centered on stated learning and programmatic outcomes through the utilization of evaluation measures.
    • Review University policies, procedures, and materials in collaboration with key campus partners to ensure promotion of a safe and welcoming environment.
    • Oversee publication and marketing materials including newsletters, social media content, brochures, etc.
    • Serve on University committees as appropriate and/or assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    • Master’s degree required.  Masters in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration preferred.
    • Minimum 5 years of work-related experience in higher education or related field.
    • Experience in strategic planning, preferably in higher education. 
    • Experience working with underserved student populations and in cultivating programs and initiatives to support and develop.
    • Demonstrate commitment to social justice, diversity education, and multicultural competence.
    • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced work environment with demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects. 
    • Experience developing, facilitating, and evaluating comprehensive inclusion, diversity, and equity education and/or training programs and knowledge of leading practices for training and education in higher education setting. 
    • Demonstrated success in developing innovative strategy and driving process improvements regarding diversity and inclusion efforts in the workplace. 
    • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships and implement change in an organization. 
    • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact, professionalism, privacy, compassion and care.
