Animal Scientist conducts research, and analyzes and experiments on the selection, breeding, feeding, management, and marketing of animals. Determines and evaluates their applications to scientific study. Being an Animal Scientist requires a degree in animal science. May be expected to have an advanced degree in area of specialty with 0-2 years of experience. Additionally, Animal Scientist has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Job Summary
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license, some computer skills. Graduate of animal health/technician school preferred.tation, and maintenance of the pet housing areas. ACA is responsible for the initial health examinations of all incoming pets as well asR processing of said pets which include vaccinating, deworming, running labs specific to species, and transporting of pets to their shelter location. ACA is also in charge of preparing the pain medication for all pets in our care post-surgery. In addition, it is also ACA’s responsibility to administer all medications to the pets in our care as prescribed by veterinarians. ACA is responsible for recording the vet treatments, physical exams, and animal care requests given to our pets into our shelter software. ACA is also responsible for running multiple reports necessary to ensure the health and quality of care of our pets.
Specific Duties – Tier 1
1. Provide adequate food and water for all animals within the facility.
2. Maintain a safe, clean environment for the animals and the public at all times by following cleaning standard operating procedures.
3. Provide constant humane treatment of handling especially during administering of medications.
4. Complete Daily Rounds cards for pets in our care.
5. Basic Shelter Buddy data entry- updating kennel locations and weights of pets in our care.
6. Observation of the animals for health and behavioral concerns and communicates findings to supervisor.
Other Duties
1. Receive euthanasia certification and euthanize pets as scheduled by manager.
2. Provide support in maintaining the grounds and facilities.
3. Maintain equipment to assure proper functioning and safety, and report any damaged equipment to supervisor.
4. Inventory and stock all supplies needed for kennel operation.
5. Provide support for other departments as needed.
6. Accurately use computer programs as necessary.
7. Perform other duties as assigned by Animal Care Manager, Shelter Medical Director or Director of Veterinary Operations.
Job Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor facility often exposed to the elements. The activity includes both seated office duties as well as animal management activities, which may include handling and restraint of animals that are fractious or excited. This includes pets that may weigh over 50 pounds. Some of the work is done standing, kneeling, walking, and bending. Urine and feces are often present, as are a variety of hazardous chemical agents. Workers are exposed to animal bites, various viruses, needles and other sharp objects. Regularly exposed to strong and pungent odors.
Contacts
Contact with staff, volunteers, veterinarians, other animal organizations, animal care professionals, and the public. Supervision of volunteers working in processing/kennel area.

· Education
Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must posess some computer skills. Graduate of animal health/technician school preferred.

Prefer one year in an animal related field, kennel or clinic.
