Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. The ideal candidate would have at least 1-year previous experience in Vetmed however it is not required. We are able to train the right person!

    Operation hours: M-F 7am-6pm, limited Saturdays 7am - 1pm

    Pay range: $17 - $20 depending on experience

    Essential Functions:

    • Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
    • Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
    • Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs of the patient during surgery.
    • Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
    • Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following proper safety procedures.
    • Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
    • Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
    • Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment.
    • Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
    • Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc.
    • Any other duties as assigned.

    Requirements/Qualifications

    • Previous experience in Vet Med preferred but not required
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 40 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 40 pounds with assistance
    • Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE
    • Computer skills, MS office applications, etc.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour

    Expected hours: 40 per week
