Animal Technician jobs in Gary, IN
Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. COMPENSATION:
The current starting pay for Animal Care Technicians can be found on the Petland careers site and can vary by location, however, every new employee’s pay increases by $1 after 90 days of employment.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Performs opening, daily and closing procedures in the kennel.
- Completes procedural cleaning checklists to ensure maximum cleanliness and ensures cleanliness is maintained.
- Ensures the health of all puppies and kittens is monitored daily and assists in keeping proper records.
- Ensures proper pet nutrition, socialization, and cleaning is handled according to expectations.
- Assists dedicated store veterinarian with puppy and kitten examinations and provides care and medications as prescribed by the veterinarian.
- Selected and properly trained “key holders” assist with the training and coaching of other, less experienced Animal Care Technicians.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

- Visual Accuity - Continually utilize visual acuity to operate equipment, read technical information, and/or use a keyboard
- Lifting/Pushing/Carrying – Occasionally required to lift more than 50 lbs. at a time with frequent lifting, pushing, or carrying of up to 30 lbs.
