Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Responsibilities:
- Provide compassionate care and assistance to animals under the supervision of a veterinarian
- Perform routine procedures such as vaccinations, blood draws, and wound care
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian
- Assist with surgical procedures, including preparation, monitoring anesthesia, and post-operative care
- Conduct diagnostic tests, such as radiographs and laboratory tests
- Maintain accurate medical records and update patient information
- Educate pet owners on proper animal care
- Kennel care
Experience:
- Previous experience working as a veterinary technician or in a related field is preferred with small and large animals.
- Knowledge of animal care, including handling and restraint techniques
- Familiarity with veterinary terminology and medical procedures
- Experience with large animal handling is a plus
- Proficiency in animal husbandry and basic animal care tasks
- Ability to perform aseptic techniques and maintain sterile environments
- Knowledge of veterinary critical care procedures, including emergency response and triage
- Experience with animal catheterization and other medical procedures
