Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Animal Shelter Technician Part-time

  • The Animal Shelter Technician is responsible for the care of impounded animals, duties related to the licensing of animals, and the operations and cleanliness of the animal shelter.  This is a part time, non-union, non-civil service position.


     

    Clean animal stalls and feed animals as required. 

    Care for and release impounded animals to owners.

    Open the animal shelter and disarm the alarm system upon arrival, and secure and set the alarm before leaving. Clean the office as required.

    During open shelter hours, perform customer service duties including greeting and directing the public in a prompt, warm and service-oriented manner. Provide telephone coverage and maintain a log of incoming calls, action taken, and other information required for proper documentation. Complete the required daily report on all activities.

    Maintain accurate records of all transactions conducted including those related to dog licenses, adoptions, impounds, surrenders, and releases.

    With professional integrity, establish and maintain appropriate and effective communication and work relationships with City staff, as well as the general public, local, state and federal agencies.

    Work schedule shall be set by the Community & Economic Development Director, or their assignee, as needed to complete assigned tasks.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  High School Graduate or have a GED.  Have one (1) year of experience working with all types of animals, and comfortable around large dogs. Prior animal control or shelter experience desirable.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Must have strong communication skills.  Ability to communicate effectively with public, using tact and discretion, in responding to questions, comments and complaints from citizens in a calm, professional manner.  Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and to write clear and accurate reports.  Have legible and neat handwriting.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to complete accurate mathematical calculations as required of the position.

    REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to work within established guidelines with little direct supervision.  Ability to deal with general public in all types of situations arising during daily work activities, and ability to use a high degree of sound judgment.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Must have, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Washington State Motor Vehicle Operator's License and have the ability to follow Washington State Motor Vehicle Laws.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Ability to use personal computer, telephone, pager, 2-way radio, catch pole, ropes, chalk stick, and miscellaneous hand tools.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, run, get in and out of vehicles frequently, and sit at a desk.  Employee must have the ability to physically control animals of all sizes and be able to exert or lift at least 50 pounds or more without limitations. 

    Work for the Animal Shelton Technician is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may involve sitting at a desk and/or caring for impounded animals involving barking, other noises and distractions.
