Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     Job Description Summary
    The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

    The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the "go-to" organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

    Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon grant funding.

    Job Description

    Our Program of Comparative Medicine is expanding, and as part of that expansion, we are looking to add a Lab Animal Technician to support Large Animal research and care.

    As a Lab Animal Technician, you perform routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, medicating, cleaning, restraint and transportation of laboratory animals, including but not limited to nonhuman primates, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits; adhering to all local, state, federal and University regulations, guidelines and policies. You will maintain and sanitize animal facilities, ensuring there is adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment needed for research. You will be observing and reporting animal behavior and conditions, collecting specimens and providing technical assistance to research and veterinary personnel. You will execute environmental enrichment programs as per departmental standard operating procedures.

    Employees in this position will participate in an occupational safety and health program which requires tuberculin testing and potentially immunization. Weekend work, holiday work and overtime hours are a requirement of this position. May be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster. Responsibilities must be performed with minimal instruction and persons will be expected to independently perform duties as described.

    Qualifications:
    • High School diploma and one of the following: (1) 3 years of animal husbandry or related animal care experience or (2) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Must have the ability to work with nonhuman primates and other laboratory animal species without jeopardizing the health status of the animals. GTP maintains ABSL 2 facilities.
    • Ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection may be required.
