Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Job Summary: The Lab Animal Technician Assistant is an entry level position that performs animal and facility care and technical duties. Assists in various veterinary care procedures. Observes animal behavior and reports and records unusual behavior. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum one year of experience in laboratory animal care and use preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of USDA and NIH regulations, gestation period of laboratory animals. Read and write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; good interpersonal skills; team player yet work independently; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; organize and prioritize workload; manage multiple assignments effectively; accept direction; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; detail-oriented. Use computer and software programs necessary to the position; perform basic math functions; distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work; see adequately to read computer screens and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensures and Certifications: Completion of Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) examination administered by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within one year of employment required. Valid Driver's License required at time of hire.
