Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) located at 2331 15th St, is searching for an experienced Veterinary Technician to work in our Animal Clinic that serves our local community's owned pets.     Position Summary:
    Veterinary Technicians are under the direct guidance and supervision of the Clinic Manager to support the Veterinarians. Incumbents of this position are required to fully assist the practitioners, to help improve the quality of care given to the patients of the Animal Clinic . Technicians assist with examinations, surgery, dentals, and require extensive knowledge on preventative medications, disease transmission and management.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Assists the doctors with sterilization and other routine surgeries.
    Perform x-rays and dental cleanings on cats and dogs.
    Assists doctors with client appointments, gathering TPR, history, and presenting requests for services needed.
    Ability to calculate and administer medication and injections (IV, SQ, IM)
    Acquire lab samples including blood and perform in-house diagnostics.
    Create patient exam forms and input subjective information.
    Invoice treatments, procedures and patient medications.
    Administer vaccination boosters.
    Set up laboratory specimens and properly record results.
    Promote the importance of microchipping, flea and heartworm preventative to clients.
    Cleans and disinfects cages, treatment area, and exam rooms as needed.
    Implant Microchips under the guidance of the Veterinarian.
    Restrains animals as needed.
    Performs diagnostic tests and x-rays.
    Provides a professional, informative interaction with clients
    Providing a Fear Free environment for the patients before, during and after their visit.
    Help to maintain inventory and cleanliness of entire clinic.
    Provides an excellent overall client experience.
    Communicates treatment plans and post operative care with owners.
    Comply with all policies as described in the Humane Society of Sarasota County Employee Handbook.
    Other duties may be assigned, based on operational needs.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    High School Diploma/GED required.
    Minimum of 2 years of experience as a veterinary technician assisting with sterilization and routine surgical procedures.
    Experience with performing routine dental procedures and the ability to perform dental radiographs as needed.
    Knowledgeable in core veterinary medicine.
    Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required.
    Able to work with all Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Teams.
    Create a culture of embracing volunteerism, emphasizing the importance of volunteers in all aspects of the organization.
    Must agree to, and adhere at all times to the departments Workplace Culture Agreement.
    Ability to multitask.

    Physical Requirements:
    Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
    This position is labor-intensive; moderate to great physical exertion is required; including bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching above/below the waist, pushing/pulling movements, lifting, walking, sitting, and standing and in conditions involving temperature fluctuations.
    Must work with cleaning solvents.
    Must have reliable transportation.
    Ability to work directly with both cats and dogs of all breeds, sizes, and temperament.

    Position Schedule:
    40 hours per week. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that may vary and could include weekends as needed for community events and non profit support. The position may require additional hours, including holidays and emergencies.
