Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     Responsibilities

    • Care of hospitalized patients ensuring comfort including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observation of illness, and keeping animals clean.
    • General cleaning of public and employee areas, building and yard maintenance to maintain a clean, odor-free, and attractive environment.
    • Prepare and maintain exam rooms and treatment areas
    • Ability to restrain for procedures performed by technicians or veterinarians, utilizing Low Stress/Fear Free handling methods
    • Keep patient medical records up-to-date and accurate
    • Sample collection and processing for in-house and reference laboratories
    • Knowledge of routine front desk procedures to assist team members

    Required skills and qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Previous experience working in the veterinary or animal care field
    • Must be reliable and punctual
    • Must be a team player and have compassion for pets and their people
    • The ability to handle stressful situations with grace, compassion and professionalism
    • Understands different communication styles and modifies their behavior accordingly
    • Solutions-based, able to handle conflict respectfully and maintain composure amidst busy and constantly changing circumstances
