Animal Technician, Sr. jobs in Houston, TX
Animal Technician, Sr. provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician, Sr. monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician, Sr. may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician, Sr. works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. - Exam Room Consults
- Surgical Assists
- Active knowledge of preventative meds & vaccines
- Venipunctures
- Catheter placement
- Pathology (reading slides)
- Cytology i.e., Rectal Smear; Ear Swab; Impression Smears, Skin Scrapes
- Routine Procedures and Treatments
- Medication Dispensation
- Dentals
- Hospitalized Patient Care
- Client/Owner Relations & Education
Requirements- Highschool Diploma or equivalent
- 2 years of recent vet tech experience with increasing responsibilities.
- Ability to perform routine medical procedures (e.g., collect samples, draw blood, administer vaccines)
- Ability to maintain clear and accurate records.
- Ability to properly restrain patients.
- Knowledge of commonly used veterinary medical terminology and procedures.
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted without direct supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to show empathy, respect, and compassion toward clients and patients.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects more than 40 pounds w/ assistance.
- Bilingual - Spanish is a plus.
- Must be able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises.
- May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste, and contagious diseases.
