The Underground Mining Museum - In 1990, three county workers and numerous volunteers- all former miners- set to work blasting out 200,000 cubic feet of rock to make what is now the Underground Mining Museum and Community Center- an 11,000 square foot facility located entirely underground. Since its opening in 1992, thousands of people travel through each year to step into the past and learn a little about the 100 years of hard rock mining in Creede.
The boring stuff - Gift shop personnel assist shoppers with purchases, facilitate audio guided tours, and answer questions (ranging from 'What is this rock?' to 'Where should we go for lunch?'). Availability from Memorial Day through Labor Day preferred, but arrangements can be made otherwise. Must be available for the entirety of July. We have a number of events throughout the summer, some of which will be required and some are optional. Community Center events include:
The slightly less boring stuff - As a Mineral County employee, you will receive time and a half for any holidays worked throughout the summer. Pay is $16/hour, 5 days/week. The fun stuff - What could be more fun than working in an underground cave in the heat of the summer? Get to know the chipmunks who make our hillside their home, enjoy a live show at the Creede Repertory Theatre, raft the headwaters of the Rio Grande, fish for native cutthroat, hike a 14,000ft peak, or cozy up in your cabin on the hill and read through your stash of novels.
