      Job Description

      Job purpose

      The Accountant - Gift and Endowment Compliance supports the Foundation in fulfilling its responsibilities for gift and endowment compliance by ensuring gift and endowment funds are expended in accordance with donor intent and that administrative obligations of the gift agreement are met; assists University and UofL Health Foundation departments on matters related to gift and endowment compliance such as interpretation of donor intent and gift repurposing process; and participates in formulation of and monitors adherence to gift and endowment policies.  This position also uploads and maintains data in Fundriver (gift and endowment management software), supports external users, prepares monthly reports, and assists with spending policy calculation, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and UPMIFA.

       

      Duties and responsibilities

      Executes the Foundation’s Gift and Endowment Compliance Program

      • Reviews monthly endowment and gift expense reimbursement requests for compliance with gift agreements.
      • Performs comprehensive compliance review of a subset of all gift and endowment accounts on a continuous basis.
      • Collects and analyzes data on endowment and current use gift account expenses to ensure all spending is in accordance with the gift agreement and purpose.
      • Identifies compliance issues related to use and administration of gift and endowment accounts and recommends correction action/resolution.
      • Identifies and reports on areas in which gift and endowment funds are under-utilized. 
      • Records and presents results of compliance reviews in various formats including spreadsheets and written reports.
      • Maintains log of gift and endowment accounts reviewed, identified issues and resolution.
      • Suggests and implements enhancements to the compliance process.

      Assists University Departments and UofL Health Foundation with Gift and Endowment Compliance

      • Develops and maintains positive working relationship with University lead fiscal officers, unit business managers, UofL Health Foundation personnel, development Officers, and Advancement Services to facilitate an effective compliance program.
      • Fields questions from University and UofL Health Foundation staff regarding the allowable use/expenses for gift and endowment accounts including requests for release or modification of endowment and gift restrictions that have become impracticable to fulfill.
      • Documents and maintains clarification of donor intent memos.

      Assists with Gift and Endowment Accounting and Reporting

      • Loads new gift data to Fundriver, ensuring reconciliation with the daily gift cash reconciliation report.
      • Sends new gift data to the University to be loaded to department budgets.  Assists University departments with reconciliation of discrepancies between University system and Fundriver.
      • Prepares University and/or UofL Health Foundation reimbursement report.
      • Prepares and sends endowment donor portal reports to Advancement Services on a monthly basis.
      • Assists with collection and analysis of reimbursement data for reporting to the Audit Committee and Board of Directors

      Maintenance and Support of Foundation’s gift and endowment management software, Fundriver

      • Responsible for creation of new gift and endowment accounts
      • Ensure all gift and endowment transactions are entered and closes Fundriver on a monthly basis
      • Assists in resolving unreconciled balances
      • Maintains and supports module used by external parties
      • Maintains a list of user requests for new or updated reports
      • Coordinates with Foundation staff members to update and maintain Fundriver account attributes such as campus and department ids, fund purpose codes, and purpose descriptions.  Includes assuring an endowment’s related spendable account’s attributes match the attributes of the endowment.

      Additional Duties

      • Assists with review of new Charitable Gift Agreements for potential compliance related concerns.
      • Participates in updating and maintaining Foundation policies related to gifts and endowments.
      • Preparation of ad hoc gift and endowment reports for Foundation management and constituents.
      • Cross-train with Compliance and Gift Processing staff to provide backup support as needed.
      • Completes other duties as assigned.

      Qualifications

      Education: 

      Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from an accredited institution or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

      Experience:

      Three years or more of relevant experience in one of the following or closely related fields: gift and endowment accounting and management, audit and compliance, or higher education.  The  position will be filled at a level and salary commiserate with the applicant's qualifications and experience.

      Working conditions:

      The Gift and Endowment Compliance Officer is a 40-hour/week position in a typical office environment. 

      Physical requirements:
