The clinician will support reconditioning and performance optimization and of the 138th Fighter Wing Aircrew through neck and back pain prevention resulting from extreme challenging physical demands of flight, while also monitoring, analyzing and resolving the physical readiness concerns commonly experienced both during and after flight operations. This includes issues in the neck, upper back, and lower back (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine).

Responsibilities:

• Perform initial evaluation, design individual training program, and establish records for all fighter aircrew personnel within required timeframe. Initial evaluation to be completed within 1 week of request. Follow-up appointments will be based on need, pre-habilitative plans, and any potential coordination with members’ military and/or civilian healthcare team.
• Develop Individualized Program (IP) for each member served. The goal of the PT is to address these pressing concerns and to reduce frequency and severity of injuries and time lost from service, improve long term quality of life, optimize human performance/ readiness, avoid injury prior to occurrence, increase pilot production, and support pilot retention.
• Determine the optimal time for each therapy visit and ensure as many of the fighter crew as practical receive therapy. This will involve assessing the greatest needs and implementing a schedule strategy to best meet the needs for massage therapy focusing on neck and back pain.
• Advise Unit Commanders on matters related to injury prevention. Identify opportunities for improvement.
• Conduct equipment, product, and literature reviews to ensure that the program continues to improve as the understanding of injury prevention needs evolves.
• Confidentially communicate reporting to POC and 138FW Medical Personnel with strength and conditioning and pre-habilitation results. Tracking all data points of members and providing status report to include an aggregate number and status/metrics
• Ensure safe and effective operation of equipment and contribute to a safe working environment.
• To provide an evaluation and assessment to the Government POC and Flight Medicine Physician or other valid military medical provider within 15 calendar days following the initial appointment. Follow up appointments will be based on need, pre-habilitation plans, and any potential coordination with members’ military and/or civilian healthcare team.
• To provide specific non-invasive biometric and physiological evaluations to all pilots. Following biometric and physiological evaluations, will provide strength, conditioning and flexibility services, specific to the spinal musculature.
• Perform post-flight treatments to aircrew returning from daily flying exercises. Only using acceptable treatment methods that are preapproved by the Flight Medicine Physician and designed for the specific needs of each member with the ultimate goal of speeding up recovery times and enhancing the benefits received from the other forms of treatment they are being prescribed.
• Record all members’ attended sessions and progress using standard commercial methods/practices and documentation on HIPAA compliant EMR. Will provide chart notes, for program services provided, upon the request of the flight medicine practitioner or the client’s medical practitioner
• Manage client appointments schedules and responds to appointment request. Report all patients who fail to attend their scheduled appointments.
