Job Summary
An employee of this class is responsible for assisting the Director of Engineering Services, the Manager of Engineering Services, and the Drafting Supervisor in performing engineering and drafting duties related to port activities and projects. This employee will be responsible for assisting and performing topographic surveys and data collection efforts, preparing plans and specifications, assisting with cost estimates, assisting in construction inspection, and performing related duties as required.
Job Responsibilities
- Perform various drafting duties and preparation of drawings under the supervision and direction of the Drafting Supervisor.
- Perform engineering inspection and reporting of port projects, including water and wastewater facilities, dock facilities, road and building design, repair and maintenance, survey and construction inspections.
- Perform construction inspection of infrastructure improvements.
- Perform and update database files and maps of infrastructure and utilities.
- Perform scanning and recordkeeping of existing and new files and drawings.
- Assist in keeping track of engineering and drafting records and files.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace area.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Engineering, Drafting or related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent related experience, with knowledge of mathematics, algebra and trigonometry.
- General knowledge of public utilities/engineering and/or construction.
- General knowledge of topographic surveying for preparation of project layouts, plans and specifications.
- General knowledge of road, building facilities, water and wastewater utility layout and construction management
- Ability to plan, layout and assist in guiding a work program with supervision
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in construction operations
- Skilled in the use of AutoCAD and/or similar drafting software
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, associates, and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
- Skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet and publishing software, such as Word, Excel, Adobe, etc.
Work Conditions & Physical Demands

- Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, and vehicle exhaust.
- Medium physical effort including long periods of standing, up to 8 continuous hours and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
- Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.
Additional Requirements
- Valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
