  • Reporting to the Head of Archival Processing, the Archivist provides coordination and management of a rchival collections processing related to the enhanced discoverability of the rare and unique holdings of Small Special Collections.

    The Archivist will arrange and describe archival material s in both physical and digital format . Th e person in this position will be responsible for processing identified and prioritized archival collections which includes evaluating, organizing , and describing primary resource materials, following national and local standards in appropriate discovery platforms. This position may also support accessioning work as appropriate .

    The successful candidate will have experience working with born-digital archives . The person in this position will work closely with the Head of Archival Processing, Accessioning Archivist, University Archivist , and Digital Preservation Librarian to develop and implement policies and processes for the routine acquisition, preservation, and access to born-digital archival materials including email, websites, social media, and other electronic records . This position will also help coordinate and train individuals with processing born digital materials.

    In addition, this position will play a key role in implementing a reparative framework for both new acquisitions and materials in the backlog. They will work in collaboration with other divisions of the Library to develop innovative methods of describing and disseminating library material, reflecting the newest developments in the field. The successful candidate in this position recognizes the importance of reparative work and social justice in this field and strives to create and contribute to an anti-racist work environment.

    Duties and Responsibilities


    • Accessions and p rocess es physical, hybrid, and born-digital collections by a nalyzing and physically arranging primary resource materials in the Library’s manuscript and archives collections .
    • Creates and updates standards-compliant archival descriptions including EAD finding aids , ArchivesSpace records, and other designated tools.
    • Actively participates in the development of Library supported workflows and tools for manuscript and archive discovery .
    • In collaboration with the University Archivist and Records Management, performs activities such as the transfer of digital records from University of Virginia offices and providing advice on digital records management as well as preserving University websites .
    • Collaborates with the Digital Preservation Librarian on the manag ement of the web archiving program for the Small Library .
    • Mediates access to digital collections , prepares digital objects for preservation, and uses digital forensics tools and techniques to triage digital material .
    • Performs technology monitoring for digital archives related tools, systems, and practice s , including software installation, updates, and staff training.
    • Maintains current knowledge of emerging standards and practice in the field of archives, including web archives and the application of digital forensics tools and techniques .
    • Collaborates with other Library staff on intellectual property issues of digital archives.
    • Participates in reference and reading room service by serving on the reference desk.
    • Hires and supervises student workers, providing training and guidance on the completion of support tasks.



    Required Qualifications:


    • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science .
    • Experience processing archival materials, including physical and born-digital content.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of strategies , tools, and best practices developed or adopted by the archival community for managing and processing archival material , especially born-digital and MPLP.
    • Knowledge of relevant standards and best practices for archival description and preservation including DACS, EAD, METS, and PREMIS . F amiliarity with other related metadata standards .
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability and willingness to work with colleagues in collaborative and team environments, as well as independently.
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuing education and service to the profession .
    • Commitment to professional development.



    Preferred Experience and Knowledge :


    • Two or more years full-time experience as an archivist with hands-on experience processing born-digital and physical materials.
    • Graduate-level coursework in archival subjects (including digital archives) or concentration in archival administration .
    • Digital Archives Specialist certification from the Society of American Archivists.
    • Experience editing XML in oXygen or another XML editor.
    • Experience with tools and software used to capture, process, manage, and deliver born-digital records, including web archiving activities and tools.
    • Experience transferring content from legacy media such as hard drives, floppy disks and zip disks, including creating disk images.
    • Knowledge of laws and ethics that inform digital archives and digitization activities in a higher education environment, such as acquisition, providing access, and intellectual property .
    • Experience with scripting languages ( e.g. PHP, Python, XSLT) to transform or remediate metadata.

    Physical Demands

    Ability to lift up to 40-pound boxes; work involves climbing up and down ladders to retrieve and shelve archival boxes. May encounter dust, mold, and or mildew in the course of processing collections.
