Director of Facilities

  • The Currier Museum of Art seeks a Director of Facilities to manage the operations and staff responsible for institutional capital, engineering, buildings & grounds maintenance, and safety functions. Duties include supervising the activities of maintaining and repairing the mechanical areas of the museum environment, including ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, lighting, humidification, and temperature controls.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Works closely with the Leadership Team in the development of financial plans and projects for facilities management. Creates and implements prioritized multi-year plans and budgets for facilities department, which reflect institutional goals and priorities. Monitors progress on plans and budget, and makes periodic adjustments and recommendations for cost savings.
    • Working with the Leadership Team and the Board Facilities Committee, creates and implements a long-term capital plan for the Currier complex. Obtains bids, recommends contracts, and oversees the work of facilities contractors. Communicates schedules, safety issues, and other information to leadership, staff, and public as needed. Serves as the Staff Liaison to the Facilities Committee.
    • Oversees the Manager of Historic Homes in the restoration, upkeep, and maintenance of the two Frank Lloyd Wright houses. Monitors and manages the expenditures in line with the budget and in accordance with federal and state grant guidelines.
    • Formalizes and digitizes a monthly and annual schedule of upkeep and maintenance for all building functions (elevators, fire safety, ventilation, landscaping, etc).
    • Serves as the Chairperson of the museum’s Joint Loss Management Committee. Plans and presents regular safety training for the staff and ensures the mitigation of all safety issues.
    • Assures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local building, fire, safety, ADA, and sanitary codes and regulations.
    • Oversees hiring, continuous training, deployment, and supervision of facilities staff. Ensures that facilities staff are well trained and supported in their functions, and that staffing is adequate and cost-effective, reflecting changing visitation and the needs of the museum.
    • With the Director of Security, takes leadership role in emergency planning, training, and response. Conducts semi-annual all staff ERP training.
    • Manages all maintenance and energy procurement contracts and makes recommendations to promote efficiency and cost savings.
    • Manages contracts with advice and guidance of Director of Finance.
    • Supports Buildings & Grounds staff with event set-up, lawn maintenance, snow removal, if necessary.
    • Collaborates with Curatorial and other departments in the design and installation requirements of special exhibitions and other programs.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or related field (Master’s preferred).

    5-10 years of facilities management experience, preferably in a museum or other cultural institution.

    Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical engineering principals regarding HVAC operations and maintenance.

    Proficiency in current relevant technology and monitoring systems.

    Solid financial skills and experience effectively managing resources and capital budgets.

    Experience managing relationships and the work of contractors and outside vendors.

    Demonstrated leadership skills with ability to supervise, support and empower staff to achieve desired results.

    Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work well at all levels of the organization,

    Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills, with a team orientation and ability to collaborate across departments.

    Creative thinker and problem-solver. Consensus builder.

    Superior organizational skills with a high attention to detail; proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines in a busy environment.

    Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders and work on high lifts.

    Positive attitude, sense of humor, with a commitment to confidentiality and ethical behavior.

    Proficiency with Advanced MS Office suite.
