Full Job Description
The Assistant Director will lead with integrity, have exceptional leadership skills, drive efficiency, innovation, teamwork, commit to delivering exceptional customer service, and achieve successful results. Under nominal direction, the Assistant Director is directly responsible for the daily operations and management. The Assistant Director is responsible for providing leadership and guidance to division managers, implementing departmental goals, policies and priorities, strategic direction, and providing support to the Director.
Examples of Duties
- Assists in directing departmental operations; exercises independent judgment within policy guidelines; evaluates and analyzes issues, and recommends and implements solutions; provides leadership, direction, and guidance in program management.
- Provides advice and counsel to Director; assists with planning, directing, reviewing, and evaluating programs, and work performed; verifies all recreational facilities are safe; and provides a variety of leisure and recreation opportunities to enrich the quality of life for residents and guests.
- Manages recreational division and program managers; coaches and trains staff, prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects, monitors work, develops staff skills, and evaluates performance; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve priorities, workload, resource allocation, budgets, technical issues, quality standards, policies, services, and community issues.
- Evaluates progress toward achieving departmental goals and objectives; evaluates staffing levels, resource availability, and service demands; and recommends resource allocations to optimize budgeted funds.
- Reviews and approves operational data and activity reports; identifies infrastructure needs, service demands, and resource availability; develops recommendations and plans to improve operational effectiveness, including use of facilities, new equipment, and technology, and changing community needs.
- Monitors operations to identify and resolve problems; effectively communicates operational and technical issues; assures all operational, legal, technical, and financial issues are properly addressed and resolved; interprets and explains federal and state rules and regulations; verifies department's activities follow all laws, regulations, and quality and safety standards.
- Supports the relationship between the District and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and District information.
- Monitors marketing and promotion of the department and sponsored activities.
- Works closely with Facilities Management staff on maintenance issues involving athletic fields, restrooms, and other District recreational facilities.
- Ensures high standards of customer service.
- In the absence of the Director assumes authority and responsibility for department decisions and management.
- Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquires and complaints.
- Assists in the development and implementation of annual departmental goals, objectives, performance measures, and strategic plans.
- Stays abreast of trends and developments in Service planning and programming by attending and participating in professional groups and committees.
- Oversees all sports agreements with local organizations and administers any facility use agreements with the School District.
- Writes and publicly presents agenda items and presentations before the School Board.
- Coordinates and oversees the use of department personnel, equipment, and facilities to assist in emergency and disaster situations when needed.
- Assists in the development and monitoring of departmental budgets and revenue accounts, which includes operating accounts and capital improvement projects.
- Writes and administers various contracts with vendors conducting business with the District.
- Researches and implements various projects to enhance recreational and leisure activities for residents.
- Adheres to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
- Assists other coworkers as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Business, or related field is required.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license and driving record must follow policy.
EDUCATION:
- A Master's Degree is preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Must have seven (5) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the High School Athletic Department including at least four (4) years of supervisory experience.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).
Desired Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
- Must have excellent leadership, organizational, training, and communicative skills, both oral and written.
- Must be competent in all aspects of recreation management including sports leagues, recreation center management, aquatics, senior adult programming, and community events.
- Must be proficient in the use of, Microsoft Office Suite, and Ascender financial/budgeting software.
- Provides staff liaison support and presentations for boards and commissions, as well as presenting issues before elected officials and working with the school district.
- Must have an extensive knowledge of industry standards for athletic facilities.
- Must be have an effective and pleasant working relationship with citizens, the general public, employees, and volunteers.
- Must be able to work various hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- Must be able to talk, see, hear, and read.
- Must be able to perform strenuous physical activities to include running, kneeling, bending, twisting, dragging, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. of sport and various equipment.
- Must be able to work in adverse environmental conditions.
