Maclay School seeks an enthusiastic, charismatic, and talented individual to serve as Athletic Director for all athletic-related activities.  This is a position that will demand an uncommon dedication, attitude, and level of time and energy to do well. Maclay School is the premiere PreK-12 College Preparatory School in the Big Bend region of Florida and comes with high expectations of professionalism, competitiveness, and both physical and character development in all programs. The Maclay School community is also a close-knit community with high expectations where it is common for families to invest in the school with multiple children, in multiple divisions for timespans frequently in excess of a decade. Therefore, the Athletic Director is an integral part of ensuring the after-school experience is in alignment with the day-time experience across all divisions.  

The Athletic Director will be a part of a dynamic team of senior-level administrators and report directly to the Head of School. He/She will be a vital member of the senior admin team and co-steward of the culture and engagement of Maclay students and families. Strong collaboration and communication skills will be essential for success in our high-performing culture. Maclay School is a Prek-12th grade school and highly values the connections our students share as a “one school” culture.  We see athletic competition as a great teacher of life lessons and a great opportunity to build strong school culture and close ties with our families and alumni.   

Our next Athletic Director will need to be a “Friend-raiser".  An approachable and engaging leader, the school will lean on our next Athletic Director to steward our coaches, families, and students toward a deep love of Maclay School and supportive of the long-range success and expansion of the Athletic program.  

The primary role of the Athletic Director will be the hiring of exceptional coaching candidates, training for ever-increasing proficiency, and accountability to cultural and performance expectations.  There are a total of 52 sports teams under the guidance of 17 Head Program Coaches.  The school expects the player and parent experience to be the “Best in Tallahassee” and in alignment with generally accepted “Best Practices”.  This experience must be built on transparency, availability, mutual trust and respect, strong communications, collaboration, and continual development.  The Athletic Director must be experienced and masterful with conflict resolution that arises within any school athletic culture.  

Maclay School is in the early stages of an Athletics facility expansion process, and we anticipate active fundraising and facility expansion over the next few years.   The Athletic Director will have an active role in the development and implementation of this expansion as well as the head cheerleader for the Athletic Program in the community.   

Strong understanding of FHSAA rules and regulations is required.  The Athletic Director is the expert in residence on these regulations and will be expected to keep the school in compliance with all rules and regulations.  

Compensation for this position is competitive with similar resourced Independent Schools in the region based on experience and full benefits including health, retirement, and tuition remission for children is available.    

A master's degree is required, and a minimum of five years of previous director-level experience in a multi-divisional school with a track record of success is strongly preferred.  Also, an entrepreneurial attitude and outlook is preferred as the next few years for our athletic program will see active transformation and will need strong and capable leadership.
