    Summary:

    This is a 12-month, grant-funded position offered through the NCAA’s Strategic Alliance Matching Grant. The Assistant Director of Athletics/Coordinator of External Operations serves as a member of the athletic leadership team and is responsible for coordinating all aspects for the sports information coverage of Berea College’s intercollegiate athletic teams and management of home athletic events.

    Minimum Qualifications Required:

    Education required to ensure success in this position:
    • Bachelor’s degree in athletic administration, sport management, journalism, communications or a related field preferred;
    • Master’s degree preferred.

    Experience required to ensure success in this position:
    • Two years of on-deadline writing experience, with 1-3 years of professional athletic communications experience Required;
    • Experience with website platforms (e.g., Sidearm, Presto Sports or similar) Required.
    • Knowledge of and experience in the sports information field;
    • Experience with game or event management.

    Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
    • Familiarity with statistical software (e.g., NCAA Genius Sports/LiveStats, StatCrew, etc.), as well as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office;
    • Photo and video editing experience, or experience with Synergy, required;
    • Familiarity with livestreaming options and services.
    • Understanding and agreement with the mission and Great Commitments of Berea College;
    • Ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines;
    • Superior communication (oral, written and interpersonal) skills;
    • Demonstrated organizational, leadership and time management skills;
    • Ability to work with and relate well to students, faculty, staff, coaches, media and other sports information professionals.
    • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
    • Strong interest in intercollegiate athletics administration and familiarity with the NCAA Division III philosophy.

    License, certification, or registration necessary:
    • CPR/AED/First Aid;
    • Member of coSIDA;
    • Driver’s license.
    • For any certifications or memberships not possessed upon hire, certifications or memberships must be promptly attained and regularly maintained.

    Physical requirements:
    • Some heavy lifting, occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds;
    • Ability to move freely throughout a four-floor, 106,996 square foot athletic and recreation facility.
    • Ability to move freely throughout outdoor athletic facilities that feature three athletic fields (baseball, softball and soccer), as well as an outdoor track, a 10-court tennis complex and a cross-country course.
    • It is expected that the individual in this position will work at times other than, or in addition to, normal business hours and days, including attendance at numerous evening and weekend events. This is especially true from August to May.

    Environmental conditions:
    • Indoor and outdoor.

    Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
    • Standard computer hardware and software applications;
    • Video camera equipment;
    • Scoreboards and sound equipment;
    • Be able to drive a 12-passenger van and golf carts.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     • Direct the Berea College Athletics sports information department in compliance with all institutional, conference and NCAA Division III rules and regulations.
    • Design and execute a strategic media and communications plan for the sports information office;
    • Manage the sports information budget and process payroll requests for athletic event contract workers;
    • Manage content on the departmental website;
    • Monitor athletic logo usage and serve as marketing brand manager for Athletics;
    • Produce press releases and other athletic marketing segments in cooperation with assistants and the College’s Media Relations Manager;
    • Oversee and provide athletics social media content;
    • Develop human interest stories for the department, conference website and other various publications;
    • Nominate student-athletes and coaches for conference, regional and national awards;
    • Distribute press releases to alumni, media or other appropriate constituencies.
    • Manage home athletic events, including oversight of concessions operations, ticket operations, greeting the visiting team and officials, sports information staff and event staff.
    • Hire, train, manage and assist with evaluating Assistant Sports Information Directors, student workers and/or interns in sports information and event operations;
    • Responsible for all statistical generation and reporting to the conference office and NCAA;
    • Manage the Berea College Sports Network audio and video coverage of athletic events;
    • Distribute the Visitor’s Guide and serve as the department’s primary point of contact for the conference SID, visiting SID’s and media;
    • Oversee and administer the Game Day the DIII Way training for the Athletic department and campus community;
    • Coordinate and/or take photographs of individual student-athletes, teams and athletic events;
    • Create programs or game note sheets for home sporting events.
    • Serve as a member of the department’s leadership team.
    • Promote a positive image of our athletic programs by participating in community and professional organizations and affiliated conference meetings as applicable;
    • Oversee development of the department’s master calendar of activities and events and send, compile and maintain athletic contracts;
    • Serve as a liaison to the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion;
    • Disseminate professional and leadership development opportunities (e.g., Career in Sports Forum, etc.) to student-athletes and support their exploration and encourage their application;
    • Assist with development and execution of the department’s strategic plan.
    • Serve as a member of the department’s compliance oversight committee.
    • Related duties as assigned by the Director or other administrators.

    Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
