    Scope of Job
    To perform skilled maintenance and preparation tasks of athletic fields (grooming, marking, painting and proper setup) for games, practices and tournaments for a Division I athletic program.

    Description of Duties
    • Conducts a variety of facilities maintenance duties, including the preparation of various playing fields by resodding and leveling the base paths on the baseball diamond, dragging and marking of bases and soccer field lines, cutting of lines, and clearing debris from the parking lots.
    • Follows established turf maintenance best practices such as aerating and vertical mowing and implementing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program of pesticides and fertilizers, which include granular and liquid applications.
    • Operates a variety of tools and equipment including power tools, lawn mowers, trucks, and tractors; performs general maintenance duties including refueling, lubricating parts and changing oil in assigned equipment; makes minor mechanical and preventative maintenance as necessary.
    • Maintains, repairs and ensures proper use of the various field irrigation systems needed for adequate turf sustainability.
    • Performs visual inspection of athletic fields for hazardous conditions. Participates in field maintenance site inspections to ensure work has been completed in a satisfactory and thorough manner.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    General supervision from assigned supervisor.

    Direct supervision of assigned staff.

    Required Education
    High School diploma or equivalent or combination of specialized experience in athletic turf maintenance and general education.

    Licenses/Certifications
    As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

    Required Experience
    Two (2) years of relevant work experience.

    Preferred Experience
    None.

    Equipment
    Grounds maintenance equipment and care; tractor mower, trimmers, etc. Other general trades’ tools, such as screw drivers, hoe and shovel, wrenches, pliers. University owned vehicles, and utility vehicles. Skill in the operation of tractors, cultivators, hedgers, power mowers and other equipment used in gardening work.

    Working Conditions
    Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Outdoor Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Other
    Ability and skill in the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery. This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical.
