    The Assistant Principal for Athletics is a member of the Leadership Team and is responsible for managing all aspects of a high school athletic program for students, parents, and coaches and ensures the program complies with all the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Sportsmanship Guidelines. The Assistant Principal for Athletics supports the unique Catholic Mission of the school by speaking, acting, and instructing in a manner consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned.

    • Serves as the chief spokesperson for the school’s athletic program; represents the school at league, conference, and state athletic meetings.
    • Implements and supervises all athletic policies and procedures.
    • Assists the Principal in interviewing and selecting qualified candidates for head coaching positions.
    • Works with head coaches to interview and recommends to the principal candidates for assistant coaching positions.
    • Plans and conducts annual Athletic Department meetings to ensure that all coaches know and follow the rules of the Florida High School Athletic Association and conduct their programs within the mission and philosophy of Melbourne Central Catholic High School.
    • Observes and when necessary, supervises practice sessions for each sport.
    • Evaluates each head coach at the end of the athletic season, provides feedback to other significant staff members and ensures that head coaches evaluate their assistants; files written evaluations with the principal.
    • Maintains proper eligibility files for each student athlete and works with the assistant principal to assure only eligible student athletes participate during each season.
    • Provides each coach with proper state eligibility rosters.
    • Maintains proper medical examination files on each student athlete and informs the administration via written documentation of any seriously injured student athlete and any incidents requiring an insurance claim.
    • Prepares a master sports calendar that includes conference and non-conference games/events; in conjunction with coaches, is responsible for canceling or postponing athletic events due to inclement weather.
    • Approves and schedules all games and contests; maintains a record of all team participants, contest records, and award winners.
    • Coordinates all athletic awards assemblies and team banquets.
    • Supervises the scheduling and use of all athletic fields and facilities.
    • Recommends athletic maintenance needs to the President.
    • Coordinates the hiring of FHSAA approved officials for each home contest; provides prefects, tickets sellers, scorekeepers and announcers as needed for each contest.
    • Serves as the administrator on duty for home events or coordinates proper supervision.
    • Works with the school controller to coordinate tickets sales, gate receipts, and appropriate financial records for each season.
    • Supervises the athletic trainer.
    • Coordinates transportation for away contests.
    • Prepares an annual athletic budget; maintains the approved athletic department budget in accordance with procedures and financial guidelines established by administration.
    • Supervises the purchase, storage, and distribution of all athletic equipment supplies; keeps accurate records of all athletic inventories; secures and files the paperwork for equipment lease requests involving the athletic department.
    • Approves the coaches’ requests to attend clinics and conferences and submits such requests to the principal and president for final approval.
    • Responsible, in conjunction with the coaches, for canceling or postponing athletic events due to inclement weather.
    • Assist coaches in providing news, events, updates, and photos (when applicable) involving the athletic program to the communications director. 
    • Works with the principal to handle any issues regarding coaches, parents, players, officials, or the athletic program.
    • Works with the Student Council and Assistant Principal to plan and conduct pep rallies.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, sports management, education administration or a related field.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in athletic leadership and management. Experience coaching at the high school or collegiate level preferred.
    • CPR/AED/First Aid Trained preferred. Must be willing to complete within 1 year of employment and keep certificate active.
    • Must comply with the requirements regarding FHSAA concussion-related protocol and Diocesan standards. To include a passing score and annual renewal training on the Concussion in Sports and Heat Illness Prevention courses through National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) and file a copy of the certificate with the school.

    WORKING CONDITIONS


    May be required to work more than 40 hours including evenings and weekends and do extensive computer work.


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, see, hear, and use their hands for fine and gross motor functions; required to see up close and from far away. Position may require lifting, pushing, and/or pulling up to 50 lbs.
