Has some authority for personnel actions. Thorough knowledge of department processes.   • Position Summary

    Under the general supervision of the Director of Community Service, or his/her designee, the position is the administrative department head directing the activities of the Van Buren Recreation Department and Van Buren Community Center (VBC). As Director, the employee provides direction and establishes goals for the management of the Recreation Department within Van Buren Township. Significant emphasis is placed on the day-to-day operations of the VBC and providing quality recreation programming to the community. Although general direction is received from the Director of Community Services, or his/her designee, the duties and responsibilities require considerable independent judgment and initiative. Interacts in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner with fellow employees, visitors and residents of the Charter Township of Van Buren and demonstrates the highest standards of internal and external customer service.

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, & Responsibilities

    An Employee in this position may be called upon to perform any or all of the following essential job functions, duties, and responsibilities. The following describes the general nature and level of work to be performed and is not construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed in this position:

    • Responsible for overseeing all recreational programming (regular and special events) and assisting with the facilities management of the Recreation Department and the VBC. This will include cooperative coordination with other Township Departments and staff.
    • Assessing community needs, resource availability and program development within the goals and directives as may be established by the Township Board.
    • Directly supervises one full-time Recreation Programmer and part-time staff.
    • Responsible for the hiring, discipline and termination of full-time, part-time and seasonal employees and shall provide supervision of employees as required.
    • Assists in the development of long-range community needs assessment as directed.
    • Research data on various Community Service projects with necessary follow-up and sustain the Township’s emphasis on recreational activities.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies to insure ADA compliance.
    • Serve as staff liaison with committees/commissions as assigned.
    • Prepare specifications, initiate competitive bidding, and administer contracts as assigned.
    • Risk management and liability control for the assigned area of responsibility.

    § Assists the Director of Community Services in the preparation of the annual budget requests, annual budget and budget monitoring throughout the fiscal year. Ensures department compliance with established Township policies and procedures for all financial transactions and budget expenditures.

    § Keeps abreast of professional developments, trends, methods, techniques, legal issues, and other current events through continued education and professional growth. Attends conferences, workshops and seminars as appropriate.

    • Attend meetings of the Township Board, committees and commissions as required.
    • Building use coordination and monitoring.
    • Interface with Township officials, department directors, various governmental agencies, employees and the public, as it relates to assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the various regulations, contracts, permits, and requirements relating to the management of the Department's employees. Including but not limited to OSHA, ADA, Right-to-Know and AFSCME.
    • Development and implementation of department wide policies and procedures.
    • Coordination with outside recreational partners.
    • Assist in setting goals and priorities for long- and short-term planning.
    • Effective dispute resolution as necessary.
    • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor
    • Researches, recommends and prepares grant applications and ensures compliance with grant requirements and reporting.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $74,999.00 - $75,000.00 per year
