ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, SPORT PERFORMANCE

  • The Assistant/Associate Director of Sport Performance will lead, plan and coordinate all aspects of competitive intercollegiate sports performance programming including strength and conditioning, speed and agility training, effective teaching of exercise technique, and all components of the Peak Performance Strategy to enhance and complement sport specific training.

    Job Summary: 

    The Assistant/Associate Director of Sports Performance is responsible for safety and compliance with NCAA Conference and Ithaca College rules and regulations.  The successful candidate will work directly with head coaches and assistant coaches to establish appropriate competitive and developmental goals for each sport in each season.

    The Assistant/Associate Director of Sport Performance will work closely with colleagues within the Department of Exercise Science & Athletic Training (ESAT) to plan and coordinate all integrative learning activities offered to Strength & Conditioning (S&C) concentration students within the Exercise Science major. The successful candidate must be willing to mentor graduate assistants and student interns in the performance of duties in a manner that complies with Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE) standards.  

    Position reports to the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Collaborates with ESAT Faculty.

    Responsibilities include the following:

    1.  Plan, direct and conduct team and individual strength and conditioning programs for in-season, post-season and non-traditional seasons where appropriate and permissible.
    2.  Design instructions for individual student-athletes and for specific team needs. Teach proper skills, skill development, and leadership concepts to student-athletes.
    3. Develop, demonstrate, and promote multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community. Demonstrate a commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging as a college priority, communicate to employees an expectation of behavior that is civil and inclusive when interacting with all staff, faculty, students and visitors and promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment.
    4. Hire, train, mentor and supervise student interns (undergraduate and graduate level) as S&C coaches and facility supervisors .
    5. Oversee the promotion of student athlete safety and well-being in all training sessions, conditioning activities, practice activities and competitions. Provide student athletes with instruction regarding physical health and safety.
    6. Lead development and coordination of the Peak Performance Strategy; nutrition, leadership academy, rest recovery, time management, and others as appropriate.
    7. Attend and participate in appropriate national or regional level coaching clinics and/or conventions to improve and increase overall knowledge of training and coaching techniques as appropriate.
    8. Collaborate with the appropriate athletics administrators to create practice and training schedules.  Plan and schedule weight room usage and team schedules in coordination with head coaches.
    9. Lead facility oversight for the Gianotti Weight Room and the Hill Center Weight Room. Provide equipment oversight, maintenance/repair and replacement oversight.
    10. Participate in Department of Athletics meetings and activities as appropriate.
    11. Participate in HSHP and Exercise Science and Athletic Training meetings as appropriate.
    12. Participate in Ithaca College community activities as appropriate.

    Required Experience and Qualifications:

    • 3-5 years of experience at the collegiate level as a Strength & Conditioning/Sports Performance Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator 
    • Membership in the NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Association) required.
    • NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.
    • CPR/First Aid Certification required.
    • Experience in planning and executing strength and conditioning programming for competitive athletics teams.
    • Ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment.
    • Ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural difference. 
    • Demonstrated ability to hold others accountable for behavior that is supportive of a community that is diverse and inclusive.
    • Extensive knowledge of various word processing, spreadsheet and database software applications
    • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, and strong attention to detail are required.
    • Education: Masters Degree in Exercise Science or related field.

    Hiring Range
