    Position Summary

    The Assistant Principal will provide leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service to achieve NOLA-PS objectives and Board of Education goals. Working closely with the school principal, the assistant principal is responsible for various aspects of school management, including curriculum development, student discipline, teacher supervision, and fostering a positive learning environment.

    The Assistant Principal will manage certified and support staff.

    Instructional Guidance and Leadership
    • Provides leadership for the development and management of a comprehensive program of student services and have a well-balanced student activities program;  
    • Facilitates the school’s growth target as defined by the state’s accountability program or shows progress in reaching that target;  
    • Serves as the instructional leader for assigned grade levels; Is fully knowledgeable about instruction, testing, and accountability;  
    • Sets and maintains high expectations for student learning and behavior  
    • Directs the utilization of available services and resources according to clearly established priorities and needs;  
    • Assists the principal in the overall administration and management of the elementary school;  
    • Collaborates with the principal in strategic planning and decision-making.


    Staff Development and Effectiveness
    • Supervises and evaluates all personnel in the assigned grade level(s);   
    • Conducts meaningful evaluation of staff and faculty using the TAP® model;   
    • Observes employee performance, records observations and conducts evaluation conferences with staff;  
    • Develops and implements a comprehensive plan of staff development;  
    • Defines expectations for staff performance with regards to instructional strategies, classroom management and student outcomes;
    • Fosters collegiality and team building among all staff members. Encourages their active involvement in the decision making process.  


    Community Relations
    • Builds and sustains a common vision for school improvement with staff. Directs planning activities and puts programs in place with staff to ensure attainment of school’s mission;  
    • Facilitates the positive relationships need to ensure student success with parents, guardians and community members.


    Operational Responsibilities
    • Enforces appropriate Federal Regulations, State Statutes, School Board Policies and administrative directives;  
    • Maintains appropriate and accurate data on all students and school personnel in order to remain compliant with local, state, and federal requirements;  
    • Ensures that all decisions are made with the best interests of students as the foremost consideration.  
    • Maintains a safe, orderly campus for students and adults;  
    • Establishes and maintains a positive school climate; and  
    • Holds all students and adults accountable for treating others with dignity and respect.  


    Educational Background
    • Master’s degree in education or similar area of study strongly preferred;
    • Valid Louisiana teaching certificate with Louisiana with an Educational Leadership endorsement or certification as Principal listed on certificate required; 
    • At least five years of successful teaching experience;
    • At least three years of previous experience in school administration required with additional experience in central office administration preferred 


    Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 
    • Documented evidence of moving a low performing school to a highly effective school as measured by State performance criteria;  
    • Documented evidence of proficient performance in school leadership experiences is required;
    • Knowledge of Common Core Standards, Louisiana School Accountability Standards, and COMPASS is a minimal expectation;
    • Possess strong leadership and supervisory skills to oversee and guide the operations of the school successfully;
    • Ability to foster teamwork and collegiality;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to professionally and effectively communicate with educators, parents, and community leaders;
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;  
    • Extremely effective administration of multifaceted operations;
    • Thorough understanding of applicable local, state, and federal educational laws, regulations, policies, and requirements;  
    • Thorough understanding of instructional methodology;
    • Knowledge of best practices in education and educational administration;
    • Ability to identify and solve problems;
    • Creative thinking skills;
    • Ability to create, understand, and implement budgets and budgeting practices;
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

    Salaries are determined by educational background and/or relevant years of experience.

    Performance Evaluation

    The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
