    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    The Assistant Principal reports directly responsible to the Principal of the school. He/she assists the Principal as leader and coordinator of the entire school program, and is expected to make recommendations to the Principal on matters that relate to improvement in his/her role as Assistant Principal or to the betterment of the school. The Assistant Principal performs the duties of the Principal in the absence of the Principal.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assists the Principal in planning the master schedule.
    • Assists the Principal in the completion of the schedule in terms of space assignments, as well as assignments of teachers and pupils. Recommends detail changes where warranted by previous observation and experience.
    • Cooperates with the guidance staff in matters relating to the determination of a satisfactory program for each pupil.
    • Helps in the orientation of new teachers and new pupils.
    • Assists the Principal in those matters which insure the efficient use of the physical facilities, including replacement, repair, and distribution of furniture and equipment.
    • Works with all other departments in the school: guidance, library, audio-visual and maintenance.
    • With the Principal, meets with teacher groups for the purpose of improving staff morale and the effectiveness of teachers.
    • Assists the Principal in organizing an orderly termination of the school year (including the commencement program in the high school).
    • Assists in the arrangement and presentation of school assembly programs, as required.
    • Assists in the organization and administration of special testing programs.
    • Arranges for revision and publication of school rules and regulations, policies and procedures. (e.g., School Handbook).
    • Resolves the special problems which tend to interfere with the daily routine and schedule, and helps the special staff personnel to carry out their assigned responsibilities.
    • Assists in the development and evaluation of school policies, plans, and programs, as well as helps in the development of the curriculum.
    • Helps develop and maintain desirable morale among all school personnel.
    • Helps to maintain the general pupil safety, including fire drills and defense procedures.
    • Assists in the scheduling of extra-curricular activities to prevent conflicts in time or use of facilities.
    • Upon request, assists in conducting the in-service programs for the professional staff of the school and the district.
    • Upon request, assists in the orientation of all new secondary school teachers in the district.
    • Assists the Principal in conducting department meetings, as well as meetings of the full faculty.
    • Publishes absent sheet and daily notices for students and teachers.
    • Observes teaching, confers with teacher following a visit (or gives teacher a copy of written report of the visit), and follows up results of the conference.
    • Works in team relationship with supervisors and teachers for the purpose of improving the effectiveness of teachers and of the school program generally.
    • Supervises student conduct around the building, other than the classroom.
    • Investigates situations which fall into the category of complaints and recommends remedial help or action.
    • Assists the Principal in rating professional staff members, as well as substitute teachers.
    • Directs attention of teachers to pertinent professional literature.
    • Assists the Principal and mentor teacher in evaluating the practice-teacher program.
    • Enforces school rules and regulations.
    • Deals with pupils who have problems relating to such matters as discipline, school attendance, personal and social adjustment.
    • Confers with students, teachers, and Principal in establishing the policies and procedures relating to discipline.
    • Receives reports from teachers in matters being referred for disciplinary action and takes appropriate action.
    • Visits classrooms regularly where report of teacher and/or observation indicates that such action might forestall serious problems of a disciplinary nature.
    • Operates a detention policy with student conferences at the end of the school day.
    • Confers with students at length after a serious problem; advises, admonishes, warns of consequences if the unacceptable behavior is repeated. Calls to inform parent or to arrange a conference with the parent.
    • Makes a written report to the teacher and counselor regarding the action taken.
    • Meets in conference with parent and teacher when such a meeting is deemed advisable.
    • Suspends pupils in severe cases; notifies parents, teacher and Principal. Informs parents of the need for a conference and of the steps to be taken for the pupil’s return to school.
    • Maintains a file of student discipline referrals.
    • Recommends outside professional assistance where advisable.
    • Meets with representatives of outside children’s agencies in trying to effect an improvement in parent-child-home conditions.
    • Cooperates with juvenile police authorities in reference to pupils so as to serve the best interests of the individual pupils
    • Prepares a summary of the student’s case for Superintendent’s Office where suspension from school is for an indefinite period.
    • Helps to resolve special problems relating to student-teacher relationships.
    • Confers with school personnel and parents in reference to pupils, so as to serve the best interests of individual pupils.
    • With the Principal, meets with student groups in effecting changes designed to improve student-teacher relationships.
    • Assists in the assignment of school work for students on extended periods of illness or on the home-bound program.
    • Participates in community and civic activities, where appropriate.
    • Assists the Principal in planning and conducting school programs, projects, and activities to which the public is invited.
    • Takes part in activities of professional organizations.
    • Cooperates with outside agencies that have an interest in public education.
    • Calls or visits homes to offer sentiments of congratulations or condolence, where appropriate.
    • Attends athletic and social events, wherever possible, in which the school is represented, or in which the school requires representation.
    • Assume other duties as may be assigned him/her by the Principal.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Possess a valid Principal K-12 Certificate
    • Administrative experience at the secondary level (strongly preferred)
    • Teaching experience at the secondary (preferred)

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    4. Ability to lift and/or carry supplies and/or papers weighing no more than 20 lbs.
