    Position Summary:
    The Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Leadership is primarily responsible for providing leadership experiences for undergraduate students. The Assistant Director works on a variety of duties and responsibilities that have a recognizable impact upon the operations of Student Engagement & Leadership. The responsibilities involve a significant level of contact with students, faculty, and staff as well as with individuals and organizations outside of the University. The incumbent may be required to travel locally in the performance of their job functions.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Assistant Director of Student Engagement & Leadership is primarily responsible for providing advising and leadership experiences for undergraduate students. The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Director include, but are not limited to, the following functions, which are not listed in any particular order of significance:

    Advising
    • Advises executive leadership of the Collegian, Willamette's student newspaper.
    • Recruits a journalistic consultant to work directly with The Collegian.
    • Partners with the consultant to offer professional development and advising for student leadership.
    • Meets regularly with leadership and attend executive meetings.
    • Develops positive relationships with students through proactive visibility, availability, and advising meetings.
    • Advises students in decision-making and provide resource referrals to help support student success and well-being.

    Program Planning
    • Leads or co-leads the development and implementation of divisional student leadership programs, specifically the WU-LEAD program and leadership class.
    • Serves as the chair or co-chair of the divisional leadership development committee.
    • Creates and facilitates leadership development workshops and training for student clubs and organizations.
    • Plans and implements annual Honors & Awards in Bearcat Excellence program.
    • Provides leadership in planning and implementing fall and spring orientation programs for transfer and international students.
    • Contributes to campus wide programming initiatives such as heritage months, commemorative holidays, etc.
    • Coordinates unit/department-wide student leader assessment program (implementation and assessment).
    • Coordinates staff, student, and faculty volunteers for the Opening Days program and new student move-in.

    Supervision
    • Recruits and supervises student interns.
    • Assists in the hiring of students for numerous positions of campus leadership.

    Department/Divisional Leadership
    • Represents the department on University/Divisional committees as needed.
    • Develops and leads strategic efforts in areas of responsibility within the department.
    • Initiates, plans, and implements new programs or services aimed at meeting student needs and department goals in conjunction with the Senior Associate Dean of Students/Director of Student Engagement & Leadership.
    • Serves as a member of the Student Engagement & Leadership team.
    • Is accessible, visible, and present for relevant/occasional university speakers and athletics events; attend staff/student-planned community development activities and educational events as appropriate.
    • Chaperones and assists in organization of large, annual, campus-wide or department programs as needed such as Opening Days, Black Tie, and Midnight Breakfast.
    • Presents training topics and executes department/divisional projects as needed.
    • Establishes and maintains strong partnerships with colleagues within the Student Affairs division as well as other campus stakeholders including but not limited to Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar, Facilities, Information Technology (WITS), and Human Resources.
    • Represents the department on relevant university committees.
    • Respects and maintains confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.
    • Participates in new student recruitment and orientation events.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or their designee.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • A master's degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration, or other relevant field is required.
    • Demonstrated experience and understanding of leadership principles and practices. Knowledge and ability to apply leadership theories, concepts, and practices to programs, curriculum instruction, and other activities.
    • Demonstrated experience with student program planning and leadership advising.
    • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as a leader and collaborative member of a team.
    • Sensitive, diplomatic, and articulate written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to implement problem solving strategies to manage everyday and event planning in a fast-paced environment.
    • Knowledge of and experience to design and implement creative, campus-wide educational programs.
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Willingness to learn new computer skills as necessary.
    • Ability to develop, prepare, and administer program budgets.
    • Ability to facilitate group discussions, organize and lead training sessions, give presentations, etc.
    • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork.
    • Possess strong organizational, time management and prioritization skills and be able to balance and meet competing deadlines.
    • Demonstrated commitment to issues of social justice, diversity, identity and difference, particularly as they relate to student leadership development.
    • Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that values diversity and positively portrays the University and its programs, personnel, and philosophies.
    • A demonstrated commitment and passion for professional growth in the areas of student learning and development, community development, supporting students' well-being, and best practices in student leadership, activities and orientation.
    • Demonstrated commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, and historical inequalities, and strategies for interacting effectively with people different from oneself.
    • Demonstrated experience using equity, diversity and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services practice (i.e., staffing practices, supervision, training, policies, programs)
    • Involvement in local, regional, and national organizations supporting the mission of student activities, leadership, and orientation, as well as in the field of student affairs (such as NACA, NODA, ACPA, and NASPA).
    • Availability on weekends and evenings as needed.
    • Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience advising fraternities, sororities, and governing councils in a professional role, particularly NPC or NIC affiliated organizations, preferred.

    Typical Work Schedule

    Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with some evening and weekend work.

    Physical Demands & Working Condition

    Typical work is performed indoors in a normal office environment. Occasional work outdoors supporting student or University programs and events.

    Salary: $50,960
